Hull
City 2 – 0 Colchester
Cort (15) Barmby (59)
It was Leon Cort who opened the scoring in the 15th minute. The big central defender, who is many fans runner-up for player of the season, powered home a header from an Andy Dawson corner.
With Kevin Ellison working his socks off in the troubled centre forward position and Stuart Elliott back to his bristling best on the left, City took the game to Colchester and after Ellison hit the bar in the 23rd minute Nick Barmby was on hand to cooly slot home the rebound for the second goal.
City came close to stretching their lead in the second half, with Elliott and Cort both making Aiden Davison work hard in the U's goal, but in the end came out comfortable winners. Results elsewhere gave the Tigers promotion effort a timely boost, with Luton and Hartlepool both losing away whilst Tranmere and Sheff Wed could only manage a draw despite being ahead.
Nick Barmby: "We've been threatening to get back our form... the main thing is getting a clean sheet. It gives everyone the confidence. Between now and the end of the season its all about results."
Peter Taylor: "Over the 90 minutes I thought we deserved the three points... The other results were very positive for us and of course every game is tight as are the positions in the league."
