The New Year Started brightly for the tigers; New Year’s day saw a 2-1 home victory over Yorkshire rivals Huddersfield, with Aaron Wilbraham scoring his long-awaited first goal since signing for £100k in the summer. Stuart Elliott scored the second and his 20th league goal of the season; however disaster struck the left winger in the last minute when he received a fractured cheekbone, putting him out of action for 6 weeks.
Elliott’s left wing position was surprisingly given to left back Roland Edge for the trip to Edgely Park, Stockport on Monday 3rd. Wilbraham started upfront against his former club and duly opened the scoring in the 10th minute from a tight angle. Stockport equalised before the break and Taylor brought on Michael Keane for Edge at half-time. Keane had a debatable penalty saved, however Jason Price and Danny Allsopp wrapped up a 3-1 victory.
The win at Stockport put the tigers top of the table, and made it 8 league wins in a row and the week also Peter Taylor receiving the coveted ‘Manager of the Month’ award for December.
An F.A. Cup 3rd round against Colchester hardly wetted the appetite for the tiger faithful, and a lack-lustre display saw the tigers go down 0-2 in front of a crowd of 14,027.
Peterborough were the visitors to the KC Stadium on the 15th which saw new signing Kevin Ellison started on the left wing. Off the pitch posh fans were being denied permission to unfurl ‘Fry Out’ banners in the away end - presumably under old friend Peter Taylor’s instructions. Meanwhile on the pitch Nick Barmby and Stuart Green overturned a 0-1 half-time deficit only for Peterborough to snatch a point late on with a dubious off-side decision resulting in the linesman receiving some ugly abuse from the home crowd. However the biggest talking point proved to be the booing directed at Junior Lewis as he replaced Barmby in the second half.
The Tigers visited last
seasons rivals Doncaster on the 22nd and the Div 3 champions decide
to pull one of
their now famous stunts by parading the 8 month
old trophy in front of the visiting fans before the game. This coming after
the proposed ‘fly-by’ of KC stadium last season highlights the
inferiority complex the South Yorkshire team has developed over us. The match
was settled by a Michael McIndoe 59th minute strike to send an under-performing
Tigers side to their first league defeat in 10 games.
Captain Ian Ashbee was sent off in the 77th minute and now misses the Chesterfield & Bristol City games.
New Recruits Andy Hessenthaler and Robbie Stockdale have both joined the tigers and will add experience and options to the squad for the important months ahead.
Talking points:
- Elliott injury - signing
Ellison as replacement
- Top of the league / Manager of the Month award
- Booing of Junior Lewis & abuse of linesman v Peterborough
- Doncaster’s trophy stunt
- Signing of Hessenthaler & Stockdale
