Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate does not expect to be one of the Barclays Premier League's big spenders in January. The 37-year-old and his scouting team are currently scouring the world for potential new recruits as Boro attempt to strengthen their squad after a difficult start to the campaign.

Southgate, who drafted in the likes of Jonathan Woodgate, Jeremie Aliadiere, Mido, Luke Young, Gary O'Neil and Mohamed Shawky during the summer, with much of his business being offset by Ayegbeni Yakubu's £11.25million departure to Everton, knows he will not have unlimited funds to spend in January.

Southgate said: "We have to have that discussion as to exactly what we have available.

"We spent the money available in the summer and I probably got more than I thought I might.

"With the position we are in and the way attendances have been over the last couple of years, we have to cut our cloth accordingly and we have to make sure we do the right things in January.

"But whether we will have millions to spend, I doubt very much."

Boro find themselves hovering just above the relegation zone after Saturday's 3-0 home defeat by Aston Villa when thousands of seats at the Riverside Stadium were once again left unoccupied.

Chairman Steve Gibson and chief executive Keith Lamb have in the past insisted the club will not risk financial well being by spending wildly, and highlighted the link between attendances and the ability to invest in the transfer market.

That is a situation of which Southgate is well aware as he attempts to identify the men he believes can add experience to his existing resources, although he is not naming names.

He told the club's officiial website: "Rather than deny or confirm any individual, the easiest thing to say is we are watching lots of different players.

"But the best way of doing business is to have the player next to you.

"There are certain positions we think need strengthening, but we have not ourselves come down to one or two players to go for.

"There are still maybe three or four targets for each position, and we want to keep watching players over the coming weeks to finalise those targets."
