The Teessiders took on a strong Rangers side which featured strikers Daniel Cousin and Jean-Claude Darcheville and £2million midfielder Kevin Thomson, and won thanks to first-half goals from 19-year-olds Seb Hines and Herold Goulon.

Rangers lost Spanish forward Nacho Novo to an early injury but assistant manager Ally McCoist insisted the game was worthwhile.

McCoist told www.rangers.co.uk: "We're very disappointed about the goals obviously, I thought they were down to a couple of individual errors, but overall I think it's been a great exercise, I'm really pleased."
