Southgate Hoping For Boro Repeat
By Betting Zone
October 19 2007
Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate will hope to bring the firepower back to his side as he tries to repeat his first competitive victory as a manager. Having seen Boro surrender a 2-0 lead at promoted Reading to lose 3-2 in the opening Barclays Premier League game of last season, few expected Southgate to get anything from champions Chelsea as they headed for the Riverside four days later.

But late goals from Emanuel Pogatetz and Mark Viduka handed Southgate his maiden three points in an explosive finish to a game which justified chairman Steve Gibson's decision to instal the rookie in Steve McClaren's place.

Around 14 months on, Southgate would be thrilled with the same outcome as the Blues, this time with Avram Grant rather than Jose Mourinho at the helm, head north looking to maintain their recent recovery and deepen Boro's woes.

While Chelsea have won three and drawn one of their last four games in all competitions, the Teessiders have lost each of their last three and are perched uncomfortably just above the Barclays Premier League relegation zone.

It is no coincidence that their run of defeats has coincided with injuries to strikers Mido, Jeremie Aliadiere, Tuncay Sanli and Dong-Gook Lee - and a return of three goals for in five games tells its own story.

Southgate had to play 20-year-old Tom Craddock and then teenager Ben Hutchinson as lone front men at Manchester City last time out, although he insists that should not make a huge difference.

He said: "It doesn't matter what system you play - you can play with one striker and still create plenty.

"But you have to be prepared to take the ball and make runs forward."

Southgate hopes to have Mido and Tuncay back from hamstring and shin injuries respectively this weekend - while Lee has recovered from a back problem - although Aliadiere faces at least a further week on the sidelines with a hamstring tear.

Hutchinson claimed his first senior goal at the age of 19 after replacing Craddock, and his manager was delighted for him.

Southgate said: "That was the highlight of the day. As much as I - and everybody else - was disappointed, for him it was the best day of his life.

"I must not take anything away from that. I thought he was bright. I thought he made good runs in behind. His pace caused a problem.

"It was tough for him and Tom in the lone striking role - but even with that one striker, we created chances."
