to a Toffees outfit inspired by the returning Mikel Arteta and has now demanded they "roll their sleeves up" and demonstrate a determination to "progress". In what was a thinly-veiled ultimatum, Southgate said: "There is no other option because that's the only one I'm prepared to take." If Southgate had particular individuals in mind, he was certainly not divulging their identities. But you did not need to look far for clues on Sunday, with front two Mido and Lee Dong-Gook both failing to last the 90 minutes. Indeed, Boro finished the match with a strikeforce of 20-year-old Tom Craddock and defender David Wheater. Lee especially continued to look ill at ease in the Premier League, spectacularly failing to break his duck when he headed what should have been a first-half equaliser against the crossbar. The South Korean should have been taking notes when free-scoring defender Joleon Lescott put Everton in front. The Toffees' top scorer managed to head the ball down after Arteta's vicious corner had caused havoc in the Boro box. South Africa midfielder Steven Pienaar also kept a cool head after the break when sliding home the outstanding Arteta's clever cut-back. But Southgate felt his side's problems ran deeper than poor finishing. He said: "You come away from home, you match up against teams and you have to come out on top of as many one-to-one duels as possible. "If you win seven or eight of those then you'll win the game. I don't think we did that. "We can talk about being unfortunate and missed chances and bad decisions. "But in the end it's down to us." One reason Southgate turned in desperation to a makeshift strikeforce in the closing stages on Sunday is the injuries he has been forced to contend with. "I don't know how many strikers Everton have got - I think it's four," he said. "Lots of other Premier League clubs are in the same boat. "We've obviously had injuries to three of ours. Other clubs would be in the same position if they were us. "What we can't do is worry about what we haven't got - there's loads of clubs that can do that. "We've got to think about what we can affect and what we can do to improve." Southgate was not the only unsatisfied customer at Goodison Park. Despite watching the fit-again Arteta orchestrate his side's first home win since the opening day of the season to propel them to fifth in the table, Everton boss David Moyes believes there is more to come. He said: "Expectations have risen, but not just from outside. "I think expectations have risen from me as well. "Maybe I'm too critical. I'm critical because I want us to play well and I'm disappointed we haven't done that at times. "I want us to play well and win well. But if I can't always play well, I still want to win and we did that."
