We Must Bring Crowds Back

Jonathan Woodgate has claimed it is up to the Middlesbrough players to tempt the crowds back to the Riverside by playing attractive football. The sight of empty seats has become an uncomfortably regular sight for the club who only four years ago were enjoying average crowds of 32,000.

That has slumped by 5,000 despite success in Europe and Woodgate pointed out that his old club Leeds are getting similar sized or even bigger crowds in Coca-Cola League One than Middlesbrough have in the Barclays Premier League.

Woodgate said: "We have to play good football for the fans to come in.

"I know it's not cheap getting into football grounds but how many fans do Leeds get a week in a division two below us? They get similar crowds to us.

"The manager wants us to play flowing football, we enjoy playing it more, and that's how we are aiming to build.

"Hopefully we will bring in more fans by the football we play.

"We only had 23,000 fans in for the Birmingham game, probably because we had not been playing well, but we had a good performance in that game so hopefully they will start coming back.

"I know it's expensive but a lot of football stadiums are expensive."

Middlesbrough should be guaranteed a good crowd when north-east rivals Sunderland come to the Riverside on Saturday, and skipper George Boateng has promised the Teessiders will not under-estimate their neighbours - unlike two seasons ago.

Boateng said: "I don't want to disrespect Sunderland and we know playing them will be much harder because it's a derby game.

"Last time we under-estimated Sunderland, when they came here they hadn't won yet in the league and we thought they would just roll over and it didn't happen.

"They've showed they're more resilient this season. But we're playing at home, I'm fully confident in the team, there's plenty of competition so everyone has to perform or there's someone else waiting in the wings to step in."
