Motherwell fans are in for a long hard season going by the final position's of teams who start the season with an away trip to Rangers or Celtic.

Terry Butcher's side start the season away to Celtic and history shows they could be in for a long hard season. St Johnstone, Dunfermline and Raith Rovers were all relegated after playing the opening match at Celtic Park or Ibrox. Raith had to start their 1996 - 97 campaign with 1 - 0 defeat at Ibrox followed by a 4 - 1 trouncing at Celtic Park a week later !!!

Season 2001 - 02 - St Johnstone - Relegated

Season 2000 - 01 - St Johnstone 3rd bottom

Season 1999 - 00 - Kilmarnock 2nd bottom

Season 1998 - 99 - Dunfermline - Relegated
