By Paul Reynolds

Paul reflects on City's ability to fight back with only 10 men against Blackburn. He also asks why the team can play so porly for 70 minutes and then look like world beaters for the last 20.

Comeback Kings

"The Comeback Kings" was a title given to City following last weekends draw over Blackburn Rovers. I say 'draw', although to me it feels very much like a win! The way we rose from the dead; came back from a match that seemed over and done with: with 20 minutes left on the clock.

For the first 70 minutes, I would say we played pretty poorly, even bordering on pathetically. The fact that we cannot pass a square ball between our defence is astounding, and even more astonishing is that we insist on doing this even though we have had past experiences of it blatantly failing. A square pass needs to be received; because if it is not, a whole team is caught flat footed, and the opposition can capitalise on this defensive stutter with a.... goal. A perfect example of this is when Foe (who, in my opinion is not as consistent as Horlock, the man we had in his place, but in time will prove to be a sound investment) headed the ball into the path of the attacker. Whilst I was reflecting on this incident later on in the match, I saw Tiatto jump in with both feet on one Blackburn player. I do not wish to reflect on this too much, but it proved an important turning point in the game. As is the case in many matches, the 10 men united, pulled themselves together and mounted an attack on a relaxed Blackburn.

Berkovic was amazing on the ball, cutting through the back line of the opposition as a knife through butter. Run after run ensued from the 10 men of City, whilst every fan was on the edges of their seat. Unbelievably, the unbelievable happened! After a magical run by Berkovic, Anelka bagged one in the back of the old onion sack. The eyes of every true Manchester City supporter throughout the land were bulging as much as they could be. A 2-1 defeat unfortunately looked on the cards. Although we were pressing, I felt that we may lack that finishing goal.

However, any fears were dispelled as on the 90th minute.... yes..... The Goat produced a little piece of his natural skill: finishing. This is why the draw feels like a win, and why we should take great pride in the last 20 minutes of that match. The way we played was magnificent, and if we are able to bring sum consistency to our game, and perform like that every match, the sky is our limit....
