Nick’s Thoughts #3: Feeney and the Forwards
By Nick Raynor
March 21 2005
Nick gives his views on our current striker situation and the rumoured club record-breaking bid for Warren Feeney.

Face it. We need a new striker. None of our current 4 strikers are 20-a-season men and to get Championship football, a 20-a-season man is what we need.

Is Feeney the man to do this? Yes I think he is. He is on 17 with Stockport at the moment and one can see him getting his 20th before the end of the season.

What is even a greater feat is the fact Stockport are bottom and he is scoring well in a poor team. Give him the likes of Green and McIndoe giving him service and we’re looking at 25 goals.

The situation isn’t bad either. We have the finances to spend £125,000 and it will pay off if we get promoted. Also, Stockport are going down and Feeney isn’t going to stay there and they won’t be ale to afford to keep him.

So say we sign Feeney. We have one slight problem. We will have 5 strikers who all expect to start.

OK, Leo is getting on a bit now and shouldn’t be looking for first team football. I think he’s close to retirement and if not, Penney will look to move him on.

Many people think Lewis Guy is young so he won’t mind if he doesn’t get first team football. WRONG.

Look at the pecking order when Guy was at Newcastle:

Newcastle Pecking Order BEFORE Guy left

Shearer

Kluivert

Ameobi

GUY

Now he’s 4th in the pecking order there and 3rd when Shearer goes. Chopra is out on loan at Barnsley and Bellamy’s problems have been all over the press.

Now have a look at out pecking order:

Doncaster Pecking Order IF we sign Feeney

Feeney

Blundell

Roberts

GUY

Leo Fortune-West

He’s 4th again!!! Why would Guy leave Newcastle Reserves to join Doncaster reserves? It makes no sense at all. Guy will need a little more time to prove himself but if he doesn’t, he will soon regret leaving Newcastle.

Blundell is a regular in the first-team and he isn’t ready for that to change and Roberts was just bought this season in hope that he was a 20-a-year man so he’s gunning to start and prove that fact.

What will Penney do…?
