Nicks Column: February 2005
By Nick Raynor
March 2 2005
It’s been a topsy-turvy month for the Rovers. One minute we are down and out with no hope of the playoffs, the next we are right back in it.

The month of February held many surprises for Doncaster. The start of which was by losing 2-1 to relegation threatened Torquay in a humiliating defeat.

Penney then made a mistake which I am hoping will not cost us.

Due to the loan-singing of Andy Campbell, Simon Johnson returned to Leeds United. In my opinion, Johnson had played well in his time at Belle Vue. True, he wasn’t scoring many. 2 goals in 9 games was the figure if I remember correctly. But he was playing well and setting up his team-mates.

But Penney was after a goal scorer so he loaned Andy Campbell from Cardiff. Now most Rovers fans have a lot of respect for Penney. Who wouldn’t? This is the man who got us prmoted twice in a row and then this year, pushed for a 3rd successive jump.

But I question his judgement of replacing a player who was playing well. Not only that, but replacing him with a player of Andy Campbell’s history!

He failed at Middlesbrough, he failed at Cardiff and now he’s failed with us. THE MAN IS A FAILURE, yet Penney still signs him. He got injured while he was with us so he only started ONE match before returning, leaving us with only 2 forwards.

The dreary, snowy month of February continued with us losing to Chesterfield. 2 on the trot now. Playoff hopes slowly fading.

On Valentines Day, Simon Marples found out he was out for the season, devastating him, the fans and the club. A serious hole was left in the defence. Then a failed bid for striker, Fagan, really got the players morale down. Things were not going well.

We finally picked up a result away at Peterborough, after a fine 2-0 win which left confidences high for the Barnsley match.

Then, a moment that will stick in the minds of every Doncaster fan for a few years to come. The hammering of Barnsley. The 4-0 thrashing we gave them. The humiliation they must have felt as they left Belle Vue, and we celebrated in the Rovers return afterwards. What a feeling…

We then got Guy on trial as Campbell left, an excellent prospect I think and will be one for the future.

A sraw with 7th placed Swindon followed which although was a good result, I was a little disappointed we didn’t get all 3 points which we really deserved.

But we are still 9th placed, just 4 points off a playoff spot…GAME ON!!!
