He signed his first professional contract in March 1993 after coming through the youth system at Crewe Alexandra and also appearing for England’s youth team. In July of 1998, Francis moved to Notts County on a free transfer but was released by the club at the end of 1999-2000 season. He then went on to play for Exeter City but then had a spell with lower league outfit Whittion Albion before returning to Exeter for a second spell.

In March 2001, Tierney then signed for Rovers and soon became a hit with the Doncaster faithful with his skillful play down either of the wings. His time at Rovers has been plagued with injuries but Sir Fran as he was nicknamed by the Doncaster fans will always be remembered for his winning goal in the conference play-off final at the Britannia stadium versus Stoke that put Rovers back into the football league.

Since then, there have been mixed fortunes for Tierney, who put some promising league displays in but injuries soon got the better of him and ultimately caused him to hang up his boots at the end of 2004 aged just 29.
