Jason McAteer - Captain Marvel Or Past It?

What Do You Think?

When McAteer was first unveiled as a Rovers player I, like most, thought we had a complete gem here, and couldn't wait to see how he players. But over the course of the season expectations weren't lived up to, so how do you think Macca coped with his first season in League One?

Total Tranmere .co.uk – Our News, Your Views

On a clear, bright day of mid July, I turned on my TV, and was amazed. I seriously couldn't believe what I was watching, but it was truly happening. I just sat their, gaping at the TV, thinking how the hell did we sign him?!?

Yes, it was Jason McAteer being unveiled in a white strip on Sky Sports News. The ex-Liverpool star had signed for his hometown club, and I thought our signings had finished, and I was gratefully wrong. I remember seeing a picture of Tranmere's summer coup, with McAteer in the middle and I thought we were going to be unstoppable.

Rovers manager Brian Little hailed the signing as “the greatest signing since Aldo” the best comparison any new Rovers signing can receive, being compared to John Aldridge's arrival from Spanish galacticos Real Sociedad. To top it off, Macca was now our captain, another huge responsibiltie for a new signing.

And the first impressions didn't wear off. Tranmere had two Spanish clubs come to Prenton Park, and McAteer was amazing, and looked like he was still playing in the Premiership, whereas he was surrounded by League One players. My expectations went even higher, and perhaps this is where things went wrong.

Going into a couple of games, Macca still played upto his potential, but then something must have been in the air, and his form dropped. Perhaps he found himself trying to impress people to much, and couldn't live upto the huge expectations Rovers fans had of him. The ex Liverpool midfielder found his brain running as fast as lightning, while his legs were strolling behind.

That was definitely his biggest problem, on the ball, he was a great threat, but off the ball ages definitely got the better of him. And mistakes were made. One clear mistake I can remember was at home against Barnsley.

88 minutes on the clock, and thanks to a 73rd minute striker from Iain Hume, Rovers were winning 1-0. there was a scramble in the box and it was cleared to just out side the box, were McAteer picked it up. But instead of hoofing it, he tried to take on a player and was subsequently tackled. That player then lofted the bal into the box and, sadly, Barnsley scored making it a disappointing draw.

But thats not to say everytime Jason touched the ball, Tranmere where doomed, definitely not. One goal sticks in my mind, a day out in Walsall capped off by something that was trully special. With 57 minutes gone, Tranmere were deadlocked at 0-0, and Macca popped up with a goal that was a true contender for goal of the season.

Another great thing about McAteer is he shows heart. And one occasion apitimised this. If you could cast your minds back to the heart-braking Play-Off Semi Final Second Leg at Prenton Park. With barely 20 minutes gone, McAteer was injured and had to come off, but he was pleading to Brian Little not to take him off, and burst into tears when he finally got subbed. It was clear how much getting promoted meant to him. And this alone has changed their opinions of him, after some doubted his fighting spirit, with some poor performances.

In one season, Jason has probably witnessed every emotion towards him and had so many ups and downs to last him a life time, but we ask you, do you think Jason McAteer was worth it overall? Just leave your opinions below.
