As Tranmere prepare for a second lengthy away trip in five days, Louise Formston returns with her match preview ahead of the game aty Boreham Wood on Saturday.....

After last weekend’s result against Guiseley, Rovers’ fans were hoping for the best when it came to Woking on Tuesday night, but sadly the players couldn’t repeat their efforts and were left suffering a 4-1 defeat.  Stats from the game show that despite having almost 60% of the possession Rovers failed to make it count and were left with a James Norwood consolation scored at the death - his third in two games now.

Boreham Wood meanwhile head into the game after a 1-1 draw with Lincoln City in midweek.  They sit 20th in the table, just three points above the drop zone but thanks to five draws in the last ten games they’re arguably more in form than Rovers who’ve actually lost five in the last ten.

Previous Meeting:

Boreham Wood visited Prenton Park back in August and left with all three points after goals from Graeme Montgomery (who has since gone out on loan) and Harry Crawford gave the visitors a two goal lead.  It was Rovers’ first defeat of the season and they’ll been keen to prove they can beat Boreham Wood on Saturday.

Team News:

This week has seen a lot of movement in the Tranmere camp with loan signings being made and recalled. Joining the club is Lee Vaughan, formerly of Cheltenham Town.  Vaughan is a right back and is struggling to get into the Cheltenham side but the 29-year old was part of a successful Kidderminster Harriers side who finished second in the League in 2013, with Vaughan featuring the in the Conference Team of the Year.

Also on his way in is Jake Kirby who returns from his loan of Stockport after scoring five goals in twelve games.  Whilst Kirby is returning, Jonny Margetts makes the opposite journey, signing in Jake’s place for Stockport as he hopes to get some game time and return to the club in form in January.  Meanwhile Marlon Jackson has been released from his contract and whilst he wasn’t my favourite Rovers’ player I wish him well in the future - as long as he doesn’t score against us.

Opposition Dugout:

Boreham Wood are currently managed by Luke Garrard, who’s been in charge since the start of October.  The 30-year old has been a player with Boreham Wood since 2010, and when he was appointed manager following the dismissal of Ian Allison, Garrard became the youngest boss in England’s top five Leagues.

A defender by trade, Garrard has played for Swindon Town as a trainee before loan spells across the south saw him sign for AFC Wimbledon in 2006. Making over 100 appearances for the Dons, Garrard was a popular player but during his last season with the club suffered with injury and hardly made an appearance.  Struggling to make it into the first team Garrard signed on loan for Boreham Wood, a stint that was eventually made permanent in 2010.

One to Watch:

Boreham Wood’s top scorer this season is Junior Morias with just three goals - which sort of explains why they’re 20th.  But you can guarantee Morias will be interested in adding to that tally come Saturday.  The 20 year old Jamaican started his career at Wycombe Wanders in 2012, but failed to make an impression and in 2014 had his contract terminated.

Following a loan spell at Boreham Wood, Morias signed for the club in October 2014.  Former Rovers’ player Mustafa Tiryaki signed for Boreham Wood in September and has gone on to make seven appearances for the Club, scoring one goal in that time.  Dan Woodards, another former White, also players for Boreham Wood nowadays, and featured in that 2-0 defeat at Prenton Park.

Woodards has made nineteen appearances for The Wood so far this season.  Ricky Shakes is another name on the squad list at Boreham Wood that Rovers’ fans might recognise.  Shakes made his FA Cup debut for Bolton in 2004 against Rovers and went on to score an equaliser that saw the tie go to extra time.  Since then he’s played for Swindon Town, Brentford and Kidderminster before he signed for Boreham Wood in 2013.

My Starting XI:

Brabin changed the team following our win against Guiseley and there is the old belief in football that you shouldn’t change what isn’t broken.  But I’d argue we only just won on Saturday and changes needed to be made going in to Woking.  I would stick with Scott Davies in goal but have a back four of Hill, Sutton, Hogan and Vaughan - I don’t rate McNulty and Sutton and Hogan have been our most effective back pairing.

Introducing Vaughan, a natural right back will hopefully free up Maynard to return to the centre of midfield with Jay Harris.  Either side of them Adam Mekki and James Norwood - Mekki will at least attempt to take on a player, and tries to take the ball forward, whilst Norwood’s scored three in two whilst playing on the wing.

Up front Mangan and GTF - not because I like Gary Taylor Fletcher but I feel it’s too big a game to throw Kirby in up front - his most natural position.

I’m hoping for a Rovers’ win but I’d take a 5-5 draw if it meant our strikers had learnt where the goal was again.
