Les Post-Match: "I Had an Inkling We Were Going to Struggle"
By Deadly Submarine
February 6 2010
Following Rovers' disappointing 1-0 home defeat to Oldham Athletic at Prenton Park on Saturday afternoon, Manager Les Parry admitted that after last weeks excellent performance away at high-flying Charlton, he had a feeling his side would be in for a hard time in the game and so it proved........

After Tranmere's 1-0 home defeat to Oldham Athletic on Saturday afternoon which severely dented any hopes Rovers may have of avoiding relegation to League Two for next season, Manager Les Parry gave an open and honest view of the game in his post match press conference.....

Parry told Tranmere Player........

"It was after the Lord Mayor's Show. I had an inkling we were going to struggle today.  It's well noted in football that after a good performance it is difficult to maintain it. I had a gut feeling we were going to have a difficult afternoon."

"I wish I was standing here saying we'd lost 1-0 but their keeper has made five or six world class saves but I can't.  We had a couple of chances near the end but that was it.  We're the home side and we should have more chances than that."

Parry Les

"It was a flat first half from both sides. In the second half, especially when we brought Marvin on, we looked a bit brighter for ten or fifteen minutes. Then we died again.  You're always going to get chances at the end when the side leading drops off."

"Marvin [Sordell] did well when he came on. He gave us a spark but then we stopped feeding the ball up front and he went out of the game.  The other glimmer of brightness for me was Aaron Cresswell who did really well in the first half but he failed to maintain that in the second half."

"I thought we missed Zoom today and that's nothing against Aaron at all. But Zoom causes other teams problems and causes them to sit off a little bit."

Strange thing for a gaffer to say but I went the away game which led me to also "having a feeling" so I can't judge the man

I totally believe in supporting the manager after the personal abuse Barnes got proved to be counter productive.
However I also believe in constructive criticism whilst at the same time highlighting the manager has done a decent enough job since taking over.
I believe that his mentality yesterday was not a winners mentality which was illustrated by his comments "I had an inkling we were going to stuggle". My view was this type of mentality was Moore's issue at the different points where he had opportunities to take the club forward.
I don't think this means Les is a bad choice as manager, it just means that he is falling short as a manager that makes things happen.
I underrated how hard it would be to stay up this year and that is Les's phychological challenge as it is far easier to get points when you're far away than when you have a chance of getting out the drop zone.
If we stay up Les will demonstrate he has the potential to become a quality manager......but he has proved so far he isn't there yet!!!!
A message to Les "You have a great chance to lead; you are leading the club you support; you could make this club stay up this year and get promoted next; it's your choice to lead".

Nice post, though an optimistic one. Should we avoid the unthinkable this season a decent progression would be expected next season. I find it hard to believe promotion from league 1 will be on the agenda for a while

I agree promotion is a project too far, re-group,re-supply the team break out the morale and we will win this battle. However, we may not win the war!

Parry should be throwing a few cups and shaking them up. He hasn't got it!
He likes being on the telly though and was as laid back as you could get, whereas othwer managers in this position are quite the opposite.
Last chance saloon Gillingham.

Lol a little OTT there matt. winking smiley

You are awfully depressing of late tho ivvy.
I thought same thing mate but my friend (a fellow rover) has informed me when they are in total fitness which is a lot, les is on their case and takes no sh/t.
Ur also mentioned that kitson often trains on his own and doesn't seem to talk to any of the team.

Matt's spot on though. Not even constructive, if you're gonna criticise him at least add a reason and opinion and try to back it up and we can have a decent debate. You just say he's **** then go away for a few days before coming back to write the same rubbish on a different thread.

Ivvy I think the personal abuse you get is absolutely disgraceful; if it makes you feel better I've also had that abuse for simply making some points others disagree with. You are absolutely entitled to your opinion and I also agree Les has not completely convinced me he has a winners mentality and does seem to like the camera a bit too much.
However todays result was absolutely phenomenal and proves that Les can win the big matches. On balance I have always been behind appointing Les and to me he is on a learning curve and has done well.
But the hardest challenges still lay ahead.
