A hat-trick from Charlie Barnett sealed an impressive 3-0 away win for Tranmere Reserves tonight against Rochdale at Rossendale FC's Dark Lane Ground.

Barnett opened the scoring as early as the 13th minute with a free-kick from distance which gave Rovers, managed once again by Shaun Garnett after the coach had a break in recent weeks, a 1-0 half-time lead.

Once the second half kicked off, the next goal was another 25 minutes in coming but it was the youngster who signed for Rovers in the summer after being released by Liverpool who was on target again in the 69th minute to make it 2-0 to Tranmere.

After firing into the top corner of the Dale goal from 20 yards, Barnett then completed his hat-trick three minutes later after he was fouled in the penalty area - picking himself up to convert the spot-kick from 12 yards for a comfortable Rovers win.

The Rovers side was a relatively young one with with only Barnett, Ahmed and Achterberg boasting any real first team experience.

Rovers lined up as follows.....

Achterberg

Holmes Taylor Waterfall Cresswell

Henry Barnett Ahmed

MacKreth Ashcroft Wilson

Subs: Corrigan (for Ashcroft 70) Fraughan, Kennedy, Denson, Jones

Reserve Team Coach Shaun Garnett said of the game.....

"It was a good performance from the lads.  They played really well and deserved the win.  We had a really young front three and the experience will have done them a lot of good."

I wish Barnett was able to fit into the first team somehow as he looked good those first few matches of the season in midfield.

Delighted Ashcroft got his first start and good to see Taylor back in defence, in my opinion. A youthful but very strong side, it must be said.

With kay, o call, jennings, ahmed, edds, barnett, henry - we've got far too many CMs for this system at the moment - its ridiculous.

We need to identify the players we want long term and sign them up for a couple of seasons and play them.

Name which players we have on long term deals in midfield? Of those you meantioned, Henry, Barnett, Kay and Ahmed's contracts are up in the summer and Jennings doesn't really have one.

Add on top of that that Kay is a defender and Edds a right-back, we're not over-populated there, we just have very able back-up. I for one am delighted with the midfield options we have, because they pretty much cover the whole board.

It looked a very young team, the front three being one second year and two first year youth, how did they get on

He has got all the qualitys he just needs a few first team games under his belt i dont think he played a lot of reserve games for liverpool so he just needs to ajust to first team football if he stays near the first team and plays plenty of reserve games to kepp fit i think we will see the best of him

What Pete said above is almost right.

When we play 4-4-2, Ronnie doesn't think that Barnett can do the chasing in midfield although to be fair no-one did that tonight either.

He will get his chance!
