Oldham Athletic Match Discussion Thread

September 6 2008
Today, Tranmere take on Oldham Athletic at Prenton Park in Coca-Cola League One. Discuss all your pre-match views, your thoughts after the game and if you won't be at the the game today then why not post updates on our game and all others concerning us, as Tranmere look to add another home win.
Oldham Athletic Match Discussion Thread

At Total Tranmere, we always like to take note of feedback from the users of the site and respond to it in the best way we can.  One thing we have picked up on more recently is that after Tranmere games there seem to be a lot of different threads that get started about the same game.

As a result of this feedback, from now on we will be introducing Match Threads for every occasion when Tranmere play.

Tranmere are of course at home to Oldham Athletic today but if you're not going to the game, why not join in the banter right here while the game is going on?

Maybe if you have a friend or family member texting you from the game you can post their views here for others to see as the game progresses.  Or why not post the line-ups or anything else you can think of.

Why not also use this facility to discuss other games and scores that kick-off at 3.00pm which may or may not have an effect on Tranmere too.

What you discuss below is up to you but hopefully it can all be focused on one thread to make it easier for everyone to use.

Well, I'll be first to post!

First of all i think it was a very frustrating game.
To be fair Oldham were brilliant defensevely and dominated at the back and probably deserved there win!

I thought Chorley was are motm he was organised well positioned and solid unlike the Ryan Shotton.

Today i was dissapointed with Sonko he didnt really excell.

Hear are my rating anyway :

SHOTTON-7

I thought first half we may have been the better side but the second half showing was awful.

Sonko and Shuker had bad games, Kay didn't have a great one and Shotton I'm still unsure about.

Oldham didn't look anything special upfront but as Liam said their defence was excellent.

I thought Bas had a decent first half but not so much in the second.

Oldhams defence wasn't really excellent, it was only Gregan.

Can't believe you still have doubts over Shotton, he was superb.

i totally agree, shotton was fantastic hope we can hang on to him, he was in control all game and just gave the strikers no room.

yeah i agree, its going to be hard for ian goodison to walk back in the team next week. i would be harsh to drop either chorley or shotton on todays performance.

ps: report to follow.

Im really gutted after today, went into it quietly confident that we would win. We were ok in the first half, but once again failed to score when on top. Second half we were dreadful and both of our wingers, Shuker and Sonko were terrible. This is a major problem I feel as our midfield just isn't creative at all, we seem to get to the oppositions penalty area and panic, nobody wants to take control. Im a little bit concerned now as we have two away games coming up and with the curent away form we could see ourselves in a very low position in the table come the end of these two games.

i thought we played really well today and definatly deserved a point if not 3.

To start with, shuker has to be dropped, and barnett has to come in. If ronnie does this then we will be much more dangerous going forward. Evrerytime we got into good positions shuker either lost the ball or lost the momentum going forward.

Savage was really good again today and his composure and stremgth on the ball is very impressive.

Overall im not that bothered that we lost because we are only 5 games in and we are playing well and if we keep this standard up then we will be up there.

Coyne: 7 - made some decent saves and overall did well

Edds: 7 - was impressed with him again today some good tackles
Chorley: 7 - played very well at the back but missed goodisons dominance i feel
Shotton: 7 - did alryt but didnt dominate there forwards in the way goodison does
Taylor: 8 - thought he was class once again

Shuker: 3 - abosliutly awful should have scored and cost us alot of good opportunities
Jenno: 7 - put himself about well and made some decent attacking moves
Kay: 6 - shoudl of scored in the first hald but apart from that he played ok
Sonko: 7 - worked into some good places but final product missing at times

Savage: 8 - really good again great signing so far imo
Curran: 7 - worked hard but didnt get enough service

I was impressed again and throughoully entertained looking forward to the next game

OLDHAM ERE!

Well where do I start?

First half we never got going really and it had the makings of a nil nil draw, as we never really looked threatened by your attack and we didn’t excite too much either.
We did however look slightly sharper in front of goal when the opportunity arose and we took our chance well.

Second half our passing was more fluent, and at times one touch football which was easy on the eyes, even if our away strip was not!

Overall I think we had the better chances and should have scored more than one.
If we were fully fit and had Hughes up front I am sure we would have had more joy against your defence, which at times looked very static and looked disjointed mainly your left and right backs.

This will sound patronising coming from an Oldham fan with three stands but I was disappointed with the lack of atmosphere and crowd this year! I though we took around 1800-2000 fans today maybe more but the overall attendance was 6800 and something surprising as you have a football genius in charge who likes to play sexy football lol

I would agree with that Kyle, apart from the last paragraph. Just like to point out that although you may of been missing Lee Hughes, we were also missing Ian Goodison, so both of these additions to our squads may of cancelled each other out anyway.

My MOTM had to be out of Shotton or Savage, both of them were brillant. Bas was everywhere and not afraid to shoot from distance which i think sometimes are players dont do enough.

Shotton was really calm and composed on the ball and has glimpses of Ian Goodison in him by taking the mickey out there strikers leaving them on the floor, but for a such young lad i was impressed and think he deserves to keep his place in the side for Hudds next week.

Coyne - 8

Edds - 6
Chorley - 7
Shotton 9
Taylor - 6

Shuker - 5
Jenno - 6
Kay - 7
Sonko - 5

Curran - 7
Savage - 9

Sonko was awful and Shuker not much better. With these two in the side we are going to struggle to create anything from the wings for Savage up front.

Mark TRFC.. what happened when ian came back into the side on the last 3...4..5 occasions? we usually win. It's not hard for ian to get back into the side at all, and im confident he stroll back into the side personally.

Coyne - 6
Edds - 7
Chorley - 8
Shotton -7
Taylor - 5
Shuker - 4
Jennings - 7
Kay - 4
Sonko - 4
Curran - 6
Savage - 7

I thought we were pretty awful. A few things I want to point out -

Kay needs to learn to play the easy ball Instead of trying gay little chips all the time.
Ridiculous amount of Shotton bumming. He wasnt that great IMO. He makes so many mistakes and he only seems 'amazing' because he recovers very well most of the time. The save Coyne made with his feet came from a Shotton mistake so solid wouldnt be my word for him.
Coyne should have saved the header so I cant see why he Is getting such high rating because he only had one good save and that was the one I mentioned above.
I agree that Sonko and Shuker were terrible but we really didnt give them the ball In decent positions very often. Both should have scored though.
Edds Impressed me because he has a cool head and doesnt make mistakes and Chorley was by far our best player.
Savage was ok but didnt light up the match like he did vs Northampton.
I think we really should have got something out of that game because Oldham werent too special apart from having a solid defence.

Sonko saw plenty of the ball, but the guy can't control it. How many times did he get in decent positions, only for his touch to let him down, or for him to be tackled, or just fall over? He's useless.

Coyne should have prevented the goal. Firstly, he could quite easily have come off his line to claim the cross and secondly, he got a good enough hand on the ball to save the initial header.

He also wasn't communicating very well with Shotton and on a couple of occasions there was danger that could have been averted because of this.

I thought It was his worst game yet for Tranmere that Ive seen. Liam jinxed him. And yes I did watch It Mikey and I dont count easy saves because he really should be expected to pick up a ball thats rolling slowly towards him without too much fuss. Shotton also fell over allot and put himself under pressure aswell. It cant have been that slippy as It was only him falling over really.

So you missed about 6 of their shots from 25 yards from which he got a hand to them?

Shotton looked like an accident waiting to happen the way he kept faffing about trying to turn past forwards. One time he did this he lost the ball which very nearly led to an Oldham goal which would of been 100% down to him.

He looks like he'll be a fantastic defender in the future with experience though but given he's not our defender (so we aint going to be the ones benefiting from giving him experience) - he has to be the one to make way when Goodison comes back.

Who was it who lost Hazell for the goal?

Re: Oldham Athletic Match Discussion Thread

I'd go (using 5 = average) :

Coyne - 7 made a number of good saves
Edds - 6 did okay
Chorley - 7 played well
Shotton - 5 played well but made mistakes
taylor - 7 usual
jennings - 6 did okay
kay - 6 did okay
sonko - 4 dissapointing, had high hopes after the hartlepool game
shuker - 3 weak link
curran - 5 didn't see much of him
Savage - 6 did okay but we need him in the box when balls are going into the area, didn't look a goalscoring threat

With the poor performances of the wingers, maybe they need to have another look at the 433 at home anyway.

Has to be one of our best headerers to be marking Hazell so probably Chorley Kay or Shotton?
Come on Mikey you cant seriously think Coyne did well? He wasnt tested very much and out of the two things he did, he did one of them badly and conceded a goal. He nearly got lobbed from 60 yards aswell. Although that would have been a fluke.

To be fair to Danny, second half he kept us in the game and made some excellent saves as Oldham tried to hit us on the break.

Personally, I really liked the look of 4-3-3 at home and I'd still go with that. You're then automatically more attacking, with Savage leading the line and your best midfielders all in the team (In my opinion Jennings, O'Callaghan and Barnett).

To be fair there saves I expect Coyne to make really easily. I dont think It would have been 5-0 to Oldham even If we had Gavin Ward back In goal so dont exagerate.

Especially one where they guy hit it on the half volley!

Theres no way most other keepers in our league would of saved it.

i agree with a lot of what has been said

For me the weak links are the 2 wings. I applaud Shuker for coming out and saying he needs more match practice, but surely this should be done in the reserves as he is clearly not playing well.

Sonko too had an off day.

That aside, savage still played well, some good touches, and strong on the ball. Pity the service was crap
