Friendly Match - Tuesday 29th July 2008

Tranmere R  Vs Bolton W

Kick-Off - 7.45pm at Prenton Park

By Barrie Nelson

Tonight sees yet another friendly game for League One side Tranmere Rovers as they face a stern test against Gary Megson's Bolton Wanderers side from the Barclays Premier League.

Bolton also visited Prenton Park during last season's pre-season campaign and scraped a 1-0 victory over a very hard working Tranmere side.  Ricardo Vaz Te the man on the score sheet that time around.

However, Rovers could have an edge results wise going into this game as Bolton lost 1-0 against Macclesfield last Saturday on the same day that Rovers recorded a 2-1 victory over Morecambe.  Lets hope Tranmere take the momentum of that win into the game versus Bolton.

Tranmere and Bolton became fierce rivals when both sides where in Division 1 (now the Championship) when they met in the Worthington Cup Semi-final in 2000 with Rovers of course coming out on top and eventually going on to finish runners up in the competition.

However the last competitive meeting between the two clubs came in an FA Cup Third Round Replay in 2004 when Tranmere recorded a 2-1 extra time victory over the Trotters at the Reebok Stadium.  A goal from Eugene Dadi and a truly remarkable strike from Iain Hume gave Tranmere the victory that night.

Tonight is more than likely to see the home debut of new Rovers loan signing Godwin Antwi.  The Rovers number two signed on a six month loan basis from Liverpool last week and featured in that friendly win at Morecambe on Saturday.

All of the new summer signings are likely to feature and Ian Goodison may have a chance to pit his wits against his fellow countryman, Ricardo Gardner.

One player that will definitely be missing for Bolton will be El Hadji Diouf, the highly controversial ex-Liverpool man who has moved to Sunderland for an undisclosed fee.

Tickets for the game are very cheap so why not come down to the game?  Kick-off is at 7:45pm and admission prices are £7.00 Adults and £3.00 Concessions.

Decent preview, though I'd have thought the rivalry could be dated back as far as the play-off final in 91/92?

Elton Welsby still gets dog turds through the post, I believe.
