After we reported Tranmere’s interest in him last month, Rovers have today confirmed that Liverpool defender Godwin Antwi has signed for the Club on loan until January, beating off competition from League Two sides including local neighbours Chester City.

Ronnie Moore's sixth new signing of the summer started his career at Real Zaragoza, before joining Liverpool in 2005 although he is yet to make a senior appearance for the Merseyside club.

However, he has spent time on loan at two clubs over the last two seasons, firstly spending three months at Accrington Stanley during the 2006-07 season, making nine appearances for the Lancashire club and thene spending the whole of last season at Hartlepool, where he made 34 appearances, scoring once.

He played once against Tranmere last season, helping Hartlepool to a 3-1 Tuesday night win over Rovers at Victoria Park.

Rovers New Signing Godwin Antwi!

Antwi, who was born in Ghana but holds a Spanish Passport, has been a successful part of the Liverpool reserve team over recent years, picking up a F.A. Youth Cup winners medal with the club in 2006.

The signing comes after Ronnie Moore confirmed he would look at bringing youngsters across the water to Prenton Park to help fill out his squad,, with Antwi becoming Tranmere's first loan signing from Liverpool since David Raven joined in 2005-06.

The youngster will take the Number 2 shirt vacated by Robbie Stockdale at the end of last season.

Speaking to the Tranmere Rovers Official Website, Manager Ronnie Moore said....

"Godwin is a very talented young defender who we've been watching for some time.  When I heard he had become available on loan I jumped at the chance of bringing him in to play right back."

"He has spent the last three seasons at Liverpool so has worked with some great coaches.  He is comfortable on the ball, already has Football League experience from his time at Hartlepool and he will add quality, strength and pace to our defence. Hopefully we will be able to keep him beyond January."

"I'd like to thank Rafa Benitez and Liverpool Football Club for allowing him to come here. It is great that the two clubs are able to work together to help the career of a young player."

Godwin added.....................

"I'm very happy to be here, Tranmere is a good club and it will be a great experience for me.  I'm looking forward to meeting my new team mates and some hard training ahead of the season."

Godwin will be available for Tranmere's pre-season friendlies at Prenton Park against Bolton on Tuesday 29th July and Blackpool on Saturday 2nd August.

Spent last season with Hartlepool, lost his place there and spent the latter part of the season on the bench.
Plays centre half or centre midfield, 20 years old.
Must be half decent to be at Liverpool.
The squad is starting to have a little depth now.

Seems like a good signing, and I really hope we can keep Barnett and get jenno tied to a new deal, then all of a sudden it doesen't look like an awful summer after all.

that leaves us now with 4! players available as rightbacks; Holmes, Edds, Kay, and Antwi.
waste of wages imo! Danny holmes is more than capable of playing in the position permanently

I imagine edds will be in central mid with jenno, maybe george. Antwi centre back. That leaves Kay and Holmes and Kay can play anywhere and everywhere so Holmes is the likely candidate imo.

Nah, well go 4-3-3, antwi right back, o'callaghan, jenno and edds in the centre midfield!

After today's game I would seriously play Antwi and Chorley at centre-back and Holmes at right-back.

I don't know what's up with Goodison but he looks dodgy.

We're not going to sign a player on loan from Liverpool and not play him, so whatever the formation, I imagine Antwi will play

I said when I saw Goodison vs Liverpool that I thought he had 'lost it' He doesnt fill me with confidence anymore and I would play Chorley and Kay at the back with Antwi RB and Taylor LB.

you dont lose it over a month or so.
i thought he looked good over the last few games of the season.

i would also like to see antwi and chorely at the back. that mixture of chorleys arial ability and antwi's pace would be superb.

You can lose confidence In a player very quickly. Goodison has been massively over-rated by our fans. Yes he was a good defender but he made so many rash mistakes I never felt 100% comfortable with him playing tbh.

I agree with Dave. He was never my favourite player and I've never had full confidence in him. However, he appears to have cult status amongst a lot of Rovers fans who attend week in, week out. Perhaps I only ever saw him when he had a bad game or was sent off - he always appeared sluggish if not lazy. But like I said previously he's not getting any younger - it's amazing how quickly age can creep on you!

'losing it' usually reffers to a players ability not your confidence in them

Goodison is a good player. Age caught up with him towards the end of last season I'd say as his pace clearly slowed up, but he's got one more year left in him. However, playing lots of games for Jamaica won't help

"He always appears sluggish"

I think that is kinda like his playing style and the way in which he moves.

If you get me!

Agree there Cal, I mean he's a very cool customer who is never hurried, when in possession or after an attacker. That's just how he is, and lets be honest, he's been successful with it

I agree with the positives about Goodison mentioned here and I just hope that Saturday was a one-off - it was a terrible misjudgement but I've seen Chorley do similar last season but he looks solid this season so far so it would be harsh I guess to say Goodison has'lost it'.

As I said above though, it's good to see the defence doing well without him there which didn't happen last season!

I agree he does play like that, But Its not ALWAYS the best way to play. I dont particularly like CB's taking risks In the own half. I suppose he can still do a job but IMO there Is no chance he Is as good as Kay or Chorley.

Kay who also consistently takes risks in his own half?
