Rovers Look Set to Lose Winger and Striker
By Deadly Submarine
May 29 2008
Rumours have been rife this week that both Steve Davies and Calvin Zola may well be set to depart Prenton Park this summer for pastures new with one reportedly moving up a division and the other taking a sideways step to another Club in Coca-Cola League One.
Davies and Zola on the Move?

There are reports this week that Tranmere could be losing two further players in the next few weeks as they line up moves to other Clubs for next season.

If rumours are to be believed it would seem that winger Steve Davies is bound for the Championship with a move to newly relegated Derby County as Paul Jewell once again looks to raid Rovers just as he did when he took Ryan Taylor to Wigan a few seasons ago.

Davies, who started last season well before a devastating knee injury in early October which kept him out for most of the remainder of the season, is reported to be signing a three year deal at Pride Park.

Davies Looks Derby Bound!

However, if he does move to the East Midlands, he is sure to face stiff competition for places as the Rams also appear to be on the verge of signing midfielder Kris Commons from neighbours Nottingham Forest.

Another player reportedly on the way out of Prenton Park is DR Congo born striker Calvin Zola.

Rovers' League One rivals Crewe Alexandra are the team who are reported to be interested in the former Newcastle and Oldham Athletic player with a bid of £200,000 being mooted around the internet forums.

Zola Profile

Zola Could be Heading for Crewe

The loss of Davies if it happens will be almost expected by Rovers' Fans but the departure of Zola will be more of a surprise.  Both players will need replacing and Rovers fans will be hoping Ronnie has sufficient irons in the fire to put together a squad, minus Davies and Zola, that can fight for promotion to the Championship.

We will bring you news on these and any other transfers and when it comes in so stay tuned to Total Tranmere!

Lets just hope if zola does go that we use the money on someone who can score goals or someone who can play left wing if davo does go!!But cant see us spending any money as the clubs board are tight bast@sds!!

Thats not the reason we won't spend.

How about the fact we have barely any money and are not as far from administration as you may think?

We spent money this season anyway on Andy Taylor.

Zola was only a bit part player last season through injury etc, and Davies was even more so. Therefore they aren't necessarily a huge loss

Though i have been impressed by Zola's inmprovement, £200k (if correct) is too much for us to turn down, and he is too injury prone for me

Signing one player?

We will sign more than one player this summer.

In fact we've already signed 3, Holmes, Gornell and Creswell.

If Zola goes, we will need to sign a replacement. He is our only target man. We should never have swapped Taylor for Ian Moore, especially considering Zola's injury record.

A £200,000 offer for Calvin cannot, under any circumstances, be rejected, but it means we must definately bring in a new striker of the target man variety.

Agreed Matt!

We need a decent target man as you say but this would then mean a choice upfront between Greenacre and Moore next season alongside the new player.

I know who I would choose out of the two but will Ronnie think the same?

No, on the basis that Ian is his son, which is the reason I gave for not signing him in the first place

Yeah my fear is that if that situation arose, Moore would get a better chance but its perhaps unfair to assume that at this stage!

I think, Tranny_Man, that most people's ambitions for the club on here exceed those of the people in the club. Not everyone sat in that board room is a Tranmere fan and also they need emotions to be left at the door and a purely business head when the financial situation is as volatile as ours.

My ambitions are certainly very high but I keep them reserved because I know what can happen when clubs get carried away and we all know by the fact that we are playing Leeds AGAIN next season.

The start of a clubs actions wil usually come from supporter pressure. If we pressurise the club to make big signings etc. and they feel they have to to keep up ticket sales, then we will be responsible for a financial demise.

That is why I (and perhaps others) may appear to be lacking in ambition.

Crewe fans seem to think he is one of the best around at this level and that his experience is invaluable and good value for money. Seriously, let them think that IMO. 200k is a great price for us.

I would be sorry to see Calvin go as he does offer something different up front and also I think we have only seen the best of him when he has managed to get a run of a few games together, I know that can also be seen as a problem.
But we did look better with Taylor or Zola with Greenacre or Moore. The Moore -Greenacre combination was like watching twins, no height, no pace and no variation which made it very easy for central defenders in the latter part of the season and I honestly believe that is why our season fizzled out.
Also some people need to take off the rose tinted glasses with regard to Greenacre, he was very poor last season and at times it was sad to watch a player with true quality at this level struggle like he did last season and I truely hope he regains previous seasons form again otherwise some hard decisions will need to made.

I disagree strongly. He wasn't at his best, but, He bagged double figures, finished clubs top scorer(which reflects that perhaps his scoring was in relation to the whole of the teams performance), worked extremely hard. If he turned a performance like that this season, I would say he is losing it. However, at the moment, I just think he had a bit of an off season for him, which is still pretty good. He missed some sitters, but he turned in some great goals like: Swansea away, Crewe away, Northampton away.

As for Zola I agree but, I would say that there are very, very few players in our squad who I would value above £200k, so it is a good deal IMO.

a fit calvin may get over 10 goals or more this season, but i would still bite their hands off for that sum of money.

Hollands said that he was after a striker not from the Premir League and then some rumour came from people who claim they are in the know and then BBC started reporting Crewe, Swindon were interested. I think this has legs.

Could do with borrowing Calvin them then, instead of those wobbley stilts he tries to run on!!

Haha SWS! (Can't get Smiley to Work!)

This thing definitely has legs and a move away for Calvin has been on the cards since before the end of the season!

If you think £200,000 is good, it could apparently be about to get better as that Turkish Club who were reported to be after him before are now in for Zola again too and apparently Blackpool may be looking to renew their interest in him as well.

A bidding war would be excellent for the Club!

Derby have Jodan Stewart, Eddie Lewis, Stephen Pearson as confirmed Left wingers in their squad and are set to sign Davies and Commons. Up front they have Emmanuel Villa, Kenny Miller, Craig Fagan and Nathan Ellington. I dont see where Davies fits into all this. In the tribunal, I would settle for a little less money and have him on loan for next season.

*Obviously there are more players at Derby for these positions but none I can see starting.
