Personally, I think the game hinged on one moment. When Robbie Stockdale blocked a cross out of play for a corner, he did his hamstring and had to come off. Kay shifted to right-back and this completely messed us up in midfield. We missed his presence, his bite, fight and determination, whilst we also missed the calming influence of Stockdale at right-back.
After that, the midfield was so different. We didn't ever really look like we were going to create much, and we didn't. Just one moment after this chance I think, and that was after a surging run from Davies which led to a blocked shot late on!
Before this though, we'd been strong. First half, I think we probably just shaded it although 1-1 was probably fair as the game had been end to end, with each side having regular chances.
Up top, Shuker was taking men on and looked decent with the ball at his feet. We created a few chances with set-pieces (although a couple were also wasted) whilst Sherriff was creating some great chances too with a couple of nice touches, such as one for the Andy Taylor shot that the 'keeper had to save at his near post.
The only dissapointing thing really was that the ball wasn't falling to Moore and Greenacre in the right areas. When it did though, Greenacre scored a quite perfect goal. He couldn't have executed the over-head kick any better and it was great for it to go in.
In the second half, it was pretty even. Game was turning into nothing until that Stockdale injury, and niether side had a great deal of chances. It was still though, in my opinion, a good and exciting game of football to watch, especially without the added pressure of needing to win.
We created a good atmosphere and a fair few of us travelled down which was good to see, and I'm sure the players appreciated this. They of course showed this at the end by giving some kit to the fans, whilst my mate got Paul McLaren's shirt outside afterwards, with Paul actually walking upto him and asking him if he wanted it!
Andy Taylor was my MOTM. Thought he was excellent again, although Chorley was strong as he has been the past six weeks-two months, whilst if Stockdale had been on the pitch longer it probably would have gone to him. Kay would have got it, but for not marking his man for the second goal.
Despite us being 2-1 down when Goodison went off, I still think Gavin Ward has @#$%& us over for the second time this season today. Gilligan did enough to recieve TWO straight reds, firstly for strangling Goodison and then slapping Chorley. Hubertz also should have been sent off for removing his shirt after scoring!
Both bookings for "The" Goodison were questionable as well, in fact I think he might have booked the wrong person (accidently) for his first yellow, much like Roberts was sent off by mistake at Bradford a few years back, whilst the second caution - what could he physically do when the lad had his hands round his neck?
After the game, went round to the players entrance and we were talking to one of their stewards. He says he has never seen a referee get off a pitch so quickly! Thoroughly nice guy, as were most of the stewards who were doing their job but yet again were treated like @#$%& by some of our @#$%&.
According to the same steward, Northampton were being watched by the Football League today, with regards to the behaviour of their fans at the end of the match, and the Football League are not happy with EITHER club.
The Northampton fans had been specifically instructed all week in the local press to keep off the pitch but they, as we all saw, decided not to do this.
Much with like Crewe last season though, a few of our own fans took it upon themselves to act like pratts and apparently 100 or so of you are good enough to take on 1000+ of their own. Work it out boys. What good will you actually achieve by running on the pitch against all of them, that is of course if running on the pitch does any good at all. All these people will end up doing is getting the club severely punished.
Don't forget that today we saw for the THIRD time this season somebody run on the pitch during a match in an attempt to take the game into his own hands. This is not good enough and we will get fined, if not docked points. Again, our fans showed themselves up good and proper as idiots.
In all, a dissapointing yet controversial way to end the season. However, a defeat is a defeat, although I feel a draw may have been the fairer result. BUT, we have, for the second time this season, made it EIGHT away league games without a win. This simply isn't good enough and must be improved on.
