Ronnie Moore made a couple of changes to the side that drew 1-1 at Swansea with the formation changing back to 4-4-2 after the 4-5-1 played on Tuesday night.
Chris Greenacre partnered Ian Moore up front whilst Steven Jennings returned after suspension and Chris Shuker made his long awaited return from injury due to an injury to Jennison Myrie-Williams. John Mullin and Adnan Ahmed were the players to be sacrificed from the starting line-up on Tuesday.
The first shot took ten minutes in coming when Chris Shuker set up Stockdale to cross for Sherriff, whose header was well saved.
Ten minutes later Ian Moore was in the clear after a mix up in the Pools defence but Nelson did well to track back and prevent his former colleague from finding the net.
Antony Kay miss-hit his effort from a McLaren corner and Chris Greenacre also shot over shortly afterwards from a good chance.
On 36 minutes, Ian Moore was again clean through after a Hartlepool defensive error. The striker took his time and just when he seemed set to round the keeper he was brought down by Jamie McCunnie for a Rovers penalty as McCunnie was dismissed for being the last man.
Chris Greenacre stepped up to take the penaltyand although his effort was saved, he was well placed to tap in the re-bound to give Rovers a half-time lead after a drab first half..
HALF-TIME: TRANMERE ROVERS 1 - 0 HARTLEPOOL UNITED
Hartlepool came out for the second half with renewed hope and took the game to Rovers, without creating too many chances.
After good work from Robbie Stockdale, Rovers made it 2-0. McLaren found Shuker wide and the returning hero crossed for Michael Nelson to put past his own keeper awkwardly.
With twenty minutes left Calvin Zola replaced Chris Shuker who at least had a decent seventy minutes under his belt in his first game back as Ian Moore moved to the right of midfield.
Within seconds of the substitution, Hartlepool were back in it with Richie Humphreys smashing in after good work on the right wing.
With twelve minutes left, Antony Kay rashly brought down a Hartlepool attacker after a mistake by Ben Chorley and gifted Hartlepool a penalty.
Substitute Tom Craddock stepped up and put his spot kick wide and Rovers had been let off the hook.
Rovers were still hanging on and Prenton Park was a nervous place as Danny Coyne saved from Craddock as the game entered injury time.
In that spell of three minutes added time the game was made safe from a set piece by Paul McLaren. Shane Sherriff met McLarens free kick perfectly, his bullet header finding the bottom corner of the Hartlepool net.
There was still time for Calvin Zola to rifle a shot at the keeper as Rovers aimed to see out the game, and it ended 3-1 with the result being the most important thing rather than the performance.
FULL-TIME: TRANMERE ROVERS 3 - 1 HARTLEPOOL UNITED
Weather Report
It got slightly colder towards the end but all in all it was good footballing weather.
Crowd
5,608 - Pretty poor considering Hartlepool brought a decent amount.
Referee Watch
Dean Whitestone - Didn't do much wrong, got the penalty right and had to send off their man as he was the last man. Not many problems really with the referee which makes a change. 8/10
Best Moment
Probably seeing Chris Shuker back in the Rovers team after the fans fearing he could be out for a lot longer.
Funniest Moment
A great moment in the second half when a Hartelpool player fell into the rovers dug out and broke an advertising board. Ronnie and Les were then standing there fixing the dugout.
Tranmere Man of the Match
Steve Jennings - it was great to see him back controlling the game, it was the right decison for Ronnie to put him back in the team.
Opposition's Main Man
Richie Humphreys - His goal was well taken and did well to support the attack as much as he did. Also he didn't give Shuker much chance on his return to the side.
Connections
Ian Moore was playing against his former club, on another day he might have got a goal or two as well.
Away Fans
I was surprised how many they actually brought considering they are mid-table side, but to be fair they got behind their team and probably felt a bit hard done by at the of the game.
Summary
The result was the most important thing and with other results going our way it was a vital three points and we are now outside the play offs only on goal difference.
Entertainment Value
For Rovers fans it was a nervous game more than anything and we didn't create to many chances - 6/10
Atmosphere
I think the Hartelpool fans did their best but the Rovers fans were too nervous to create much atmosphere and the performance didn't really get the fans going - 6/10
