50/50 Day: Chelsea 1-0 Man Utd, U19s Lose to Villa

Two teams, four games, two wins, two defeats, one semi-final and one NextGen Series runners-up. After four days of football, Chelsea kept their magical grip on the FA Cup and booked another trip to Wembley with a 1-0 win over Champions elect Man Utd, whilst in the NextGen Series final against Aston Villa early Monday evening, the U19s could not reach the heights of their semi-final win against Arsenal, going down 2-0, both goals scored by Graham Burke from the penalty spot.

From finishing third in their group and beating the likes of Barcelona, Juventus and Arsenal on the way to the final was simply a magnificent acheivement and Dermot Drummy, who must be congratulated for not changing his footballing principles to accommodate an awful pitch, and his staff must take an awful lot of plaudits for the way they have brought these kids on and for the way they conducted themselves representing Chelsea Football Club.

It’s a sad state of affairs that the majority of these kids won’t feel the Blue of a first team shirt around them especially as there are 25 players in front of them out on loan.

Why Chelsea have an academy is beyond me?

For fatty, he raised his colours again and the CV reared its ugly head as he made the wholesale changes predicted here and I suspect a similar starting line-up will begin the game against Rubin Kazan on Thursday night.

A solitary goal was enough to send Chelsea back to Wembley and what a goal it was.

A Mata flick over Ferdinand the donkey and from over his right shoulder, Demba Ba hooked a brilliant volley over the stranded De Gea in the United goal, in front of the Matthew Harding faithful.

Petr Cech produced two saves to deny Hernandez, whose habit of scoring against Chelsea was broken.

The first save in the first-half was with his legs, after the ball dipped and swerved twice before hitting the giant Czech.

His second save however, in the second-half, simply has to be up there in the top ten best saves in the world.

Welbeck sent a cross in from Utd’s right and on the diagonal Hernandez headed the ball back across the goal and somehow Cech managed to get an arm up and divert the ball over the bar.

Cech said after, “It was a great ball from the wing and Javier did well to direct the ball into the goal. I went as fast as I could and left my arm to do the job. I tried to cover as much space as I could and luckily I was able to reach it.

“I knew before the cross came that Hernandez was there, so I knew I’d have to be really quick to get there, that’s what allowed me to make the save. You need to have awareness of the people around you as it helps you make the right decision.”
