Aston Villa Preview: Catching Up

Not only have Chelsea had a busy time, yours truly has had the run around in the run up to the festive season, hence the lack of updates – Corinthians, Leeds United – to be honest, inspiration, motivation and willingness were severely lacking.

Last Sunday in Japan Chelsea were beaten by Corinthians in the final of the Club World Cup. The performance was dire despite Chelsea creating numerous chances and poor defending allowed Corinthians to claim the cup with a headed goal.

On Wednesday night, 48 hours after returning from Japan, Chelsea were in Cup action at a rain-soaked Elland Road (probably the last place you would want to visit, after hardly any rest) and ran out easy and comfortable 5-1 winners, despite falling behind five minutes from half-time after ‘liability Luiz’ travelled too far from his defensive duties, allowing Leeds to construct a quick break-away for Becchio to give the hosts the lead.

Juan Mata who had an inexplicably bad game against Corinthians equalised for the Blues at the start of the second-half. Further goals from Ivanovic, Moses, Hazard and Torres in a blitzing 37 minutes put paid to the hopes of the Championship side of causing a shock.

In the draw for the two-legged semi-final made immediately after the game, Chelsea were drawn at home to Swansea in the first leg to be played on January 9th 2013.

Villa are the visitors today, on a high after beating Liverpool at Anfield last weekend 3-1 and when these two sides meet, you can always back both teams to score and on more than one occasion in recent years, Villa have scored more than one!

On two previous visits, Villa have scored three, winning 3-1 and drawing 3-3.

Chelsea’s last victory against Villa at The Bridge League was back in March 2010 as The Blues won 7-1.

On that basis then, we are on for a 0-0, something that hasn’t happened at The Bridge in the League since November 1977.
