The silk-suited duffers at the FA today charged Branislav Ivanovic with violent conduct in a trial by video for his assault on Shaun Maloney’s stomach. Shaun Maloney however, has got away with ‘digging’ Ivanovic somewhere in the first instance. Rule for one blah, blah, blah!
Last night at the Cottage and again for the third time in successive matches, Chelsea conceded within the last ten minutes, but whereas they fought back to score again and win the games against Benfica and Wigan, Clint Dempsey’s equaliser sucked the life out of The Blues and they were unable to retaliate.
Harsh lessons have not been learned whilst under AvB and now Bobby Di. There have been at least 20 games this season, where Chelsea have conceded goals inside the last fifteen minutes.
I have no sympathy for the excuse of being ‘tired.’
So I am not going to use it and with the squad that Chelsea have (albeit ageing) there is enough talent for Chelsea to survive and perform in the remaining weeks but on the evidence of last night, self-motivation is the key and I believe that some of those players have ‘given’ up the chase for 4th spot and are hedging their bets for Champions League glory and revenge for 2009 in the two forthcoming legs against UEFAlona….. oops Barcelona.
Super Frank gave Chelsea the lead right on half-time following Kelly’s soft challenge on Kalou and Chelsea could have, should have a further two penalties when Kelly handled a shot and Super Frank was bundled over in the second-half.
Fulham’s major pressure in the game came at the end when Cechie Boy saved brilliantly from a Hughes, then from the resulting corner Dempsey ghosted in and headed in the far corner.
JT’s face and the rueful shake of the head as he trampled back to the dressing room at the final whistle, just summed up the night for himself, the team, the club and the fans.
