Chelsea favourites to sign wonder kid Jonjo Shelvey
By dixon9 June 26 2009 The Daily Mirror report that we are in poll position to sign 17-year-old attacking midfielder Jonjo Shelvey from Charlton Athletic despite competition from Arsenal, West Ham, Tottenham and Newcastle. The 6´1” youngster may even be loaned back to his current club.
Shelvey was born in Romford and came through the valients youth ranks before breaking into the first team in April 2008 against Barnsley when he became Charlton's youngest ever player at the age of 16 years and 59 days.
Shelvey also broke another club record when he became Charlton's youngest-ever goal-scorer against Norwich City in the FA Cup whilst still 16 years of age.
He scored his first league goal in the 3–2 win against Southampton on 4 April 2009.
For those who have never heard of him, he is going to be a great player. When you watch him it is hardly credible that he is so young, he is a strong and clever player who picks out some beautiful passes and has a good shot. He reminds you of Steven Gerrard. I would be very disappointed if Charlton let him go for as little as £3m he'll be worth £10m+ in a year or two, but times are hard.
