Shelvey was born in Romford and came through the valients youth ranks before breaking into the first team in April 2008 against Barnsley when he became Charlton's youngest ever player at the age of 16 years and 59 days.

Shelvey also broke another club record when he became Charlton's youngest-ever goal-scorer against Norwich City in the FA Cup whilst still 16 years of age.
He scored his first league goal in the 3–2 win against Southampton on 4 April 2009.
Shelvey has captained the England under 16s and played for England under 17s.
He can play as a 2nd striker or in midfield.
His total career stats to date are 3 goals in 16 first team games and 4 goals in 10 international matches.
