Academy Update: v Arsenal and v Southampton

COME ON CHELSEA
By Since66
March 16 2009
The Academy were involved in a seven goal thriller against Woolwich at Cobham on the 7th March and despite being two goals up at half-time, scored by Jacopo Sala, the Academy defensive weaknesses were exposed again as Woolwich went on to score four second-half goals to win the game 4-3.

Josh McEachran scored what should have been a last minute equaliser for the Academy, but straight from the kick-off, Woolwich scored the winner.

Neil Bath taking charge of the game (because Dermot Drummy was with the reserves), said  "We spoke about being determined and asking for desire and passion. When we play Arsenal it is a big game and the boys are all up for it. We had six or seven schoolboys in the squad, but at half-time we were 2-0 up.

Academy Coach Paul Clement (l) and Chelseas Academy Manager Neil Bath during training

"They matched us in the second-half and we made some poor errors, which is disappointing. The lads are gutted and so they should be, the second-half wasn't good enough which led them scoring four goals.

"At the end of the day, the thing that really frustrates you is getting back to 3-3 and the last kick of the game wins it."

Last Friday evening, the Academy travelled down to the South Coast hoping to avenge the 4-3 home defeat against Southampton. Alas the boys suffered again losing the game 3-0.

Dermot Drummy said, "It was a difficult test for us, the boys from their first team were decent players, and it wasn't a 3-0 defeat performance.

Dermot Drummy, Chelseas Under 16 Coach

"We had decent displays in midfield from Josh McEachran and Conor Clifford. Josh, who is a schoolboy, had fallen a little bit flat recently, but he showed steel in the heat of what was a very tough game.

"At the moment we are in a run of poor results but we are determined to work hard and stay strong as a team to turn it around.

"There was good news in that Jeffrey Bruma came through fine after a month out with an ankle injury. He was pencilled in to play just one half because he may be involved on Monday (today) in the reserve game. He looked very good."

Chelsea: Jan Sebek, Nikki Ahamed, Jeffrey Bruma (Tom Hayden 45), Ben Gordon, Jordan Tabor, Josh McEachran, Conor Clifford, Daniel Phillskirk (c) (Aliu Djalo), Adam Phillip (Jacopo Sala 45), Marko Mitrovic, Frank Nouble.

The reserves are in action against Tottingham this evening at Leyton Orient FC. The game kicks off at 7pm. There will be LIVE updates on the message board.

Saw the Woolwich highlights - looked like we were cruising for a while - oh well!

Spurs tonight should be a decent game!

"It is born out of hypocrisy and fundamental insecurity. There have been two kids on the block for the past 12 years. Suddenly, there is a third and that one is threatening to be more successful than the others and they don’t like it." P Kenyon.
