That´s a big one Chopper!
.
In some cases these are achievements that their own clubs will never come close to – if they want to play Top Trumps then we might as well join in?
No. I’m not talking about our 5th highest average attendance in English league history, not the highest record attendance for a home venue game and not even the never to be repeated 100 -120,000 attendance against Dynamo Moscow. I’m talking about a British television viewing record for a domestic English club side for our 1970 FA Cup Final Replay against Leeds United.
A great rivalry
In those days Chelsea and Leeds United were at the beginning of what was to become an intense rivalry. The styles of football were the antithesis of each others and the bad feeling ran not just between the fans but the players themselves.
After a drawn final at Wembley, the two teams met again at Old Trafford and the nation was positively gripped in anticipation. 28.5 million people tuned in to watch the replay which is a figure the likes of Manchester United or Liverpool have never ever got near.
To put the this figure into perspective, the viewing figures fall just below the Apollo 13 splash down and ahead of Charles and Diana’s royal wedding, the wedding of Princess Anne and Mark Phillips and even the newscast which brought us the tragic news of the assassination of President Kennedy. In fact, the Chelsea v Leeds United replay was just under 4 million below the 1966 World Cup Final which is the highest in the list.
For even more perspective the Old Trafford replay received more 5 million more viewers than all the most watched films such as Jaws, Live and Let Die and Diamonds are forever.
