4-4-2? Give me a left-footer then!
By dixon9
January 6 2009
Nicolas Anelka, Didier Drogba and Chelsea fans have spent just over a year now wondering why 4-4-2 hasn’t been used as an alternative tactical formation in certain situations. Scolari has today revealed that for 4-4-2 to be an option he will need a left-footed player.

"I will play 4-4-2 when I have a winger who can play on the left and with his left foot.

"When you don't have players with these characteristics it is difficult to adapt one player to play in 4-4-2.

"Malouda is the only player who can play with his left foot and he is injured.

"Everyone else is right footed."

DROGBA ANELKA

Scolari did also recently say that he had nothing against playing two forwards but with so many players out injured at the time he had no way of preparing the squad during training.

With more and more teams coming to Stamford Bridge battening the hatches playing with almost the whole team behind the ball at times, the need for increased bodies and fire-power in the box has become more apparent.

Wayne Bridge was recently sold to Man City, is of course left-footed but not seen as an attacking option whilst it’s true that for the last few weeks Malouda has been suffering a few knocks.  Scott Sinclair is left-sided but has just been loaned out to Birmingham.  The youngster is still seen as “developing” and not quite yet ready for regular first team football.

So, what we can assume is that to go 4-4-2 (or two up front in a slightly different formation) we can only do so when Malouda is fit or….we sign a left-footed attacking player during this January transfer window.

One for the future definitely.

Would be nice to see him get a run when we´re comfortably winning a game though.

I know its too late now but Phil should have tried Bridge on the left of midfield when Mally was injured,i think he would have been surprised.

Joe cole is going nowhere he is Chelsea through and through and he will cost you 20 million to replace.

I suppose Big Phil does have a point needing a left footer but hasn´t Malouda been fit at the same time as Drogba and Anelka with time beforehand to prepare in training? Perhaps not...

Very frustrating that Anelka and Drogba haven´t had a chance to play together regularly.

The club MUST back the manager this transfer window - if there´s a player that Phil wants.

yes but malouda is sh*t,

i think that might be phil's point...

"i only have one left footed, winger type and he's sh*t.. so i can't play 4-4-2 until i have a good player, give me money!"

Fair enough - so what Phil is saying is "I need to sign a left wide man?"

Malouda has been bad - improved a bit on last season but then not so good after coming back from injury. i wonder if he was still carrying the knock a bit?

I´m hoping (perhaps optimistically) that the reason Sinclair is on loan only for a month to Brum is that we hope to sign someone - and if not, then he comes back as cover.
