As Brendan Rodgers Leaves - A New Era Begins
By Snce66
November 24 2008
As the Reserves prepare to take on WBA tonight, LIVE coverage on the message board from 7pm, news broke that coach Brendan Rodgers has left the club to take up the managers position at Championship club Watford. It was also announced that Frank Lampard Snr will be Rodgers assistant.

Rodgers joined Chelsea in 2004 from Reading as Academy coach.

Two years later he got promotion and became Reserve team coach, when Mick McGiven moved up to the first team.

BRENDON ROGERS

Chelsea were instrumental in allowing Rodgers to move to Vicarage Road so quickly and Rodgers was quick to acknowledged Chelsea's efforts.

He said, "The club have been fantastic in terms of dealing with Watford and for that I give a big thank you to Peter Kenyon and the board. It is a massive opportunity for me and I am delighted.

"I've had a wonderful four and a bit years here and I've got memories both personal and football that I will treasure for the rest of my life, but it is a new cycle to go and operate in and I am excited by the challenge, and I am really looking forward to it."

Academy coach Paul Clement takes charge of the reserves this evening and Chelsea have announced that Rodgers replacement will be an internal appointment.

Clement 1

It wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if Clement gets the nod.

As for tonights game, Mineiro gets an outing, Lee Sawyer fresh from a loan spell at Southend returns.

Carl Magnay who had been suspended returns - Left-Back or Central Defence? He is quality in either position.

Scott Sinclair doesn't appear to be in Chelsea's plans for Wednesday against Bordeaux, lines-up with Sergio Tejera as Chelsea's attacking options.

Chelsea look to back bounce back after two successive home defeats, but they do have a 100% away record, just like the first team.

Chelsea: Rhys Taylor, Nana Ofori-Twumasi, Carl Magnay, Patrick van Aanholt, Liam Bridcutt, Lee Sawyer, Mineiro, Michael Woods, Fabio Ferreira, Scott Sinclair, Sergio Tejera.

Subs: Nic Heimann, Sam Hutchinson, Jack Saville, Tom Taiwo

WBA: Kiely, Hoefkens, Cech, Kim, Barnett, Pele, Worrall, Dorrans, Samuels, Moore, MacDonald.

Subs: Hancox, Elford-Alliyu, Slusarski, Saied, Pike

WBA v Chelsea LIVE from 7pm

Sad to see Brendon go but it is understandable with the Watford job on offer.

Will be interesting to see who takes over -and if itīs Clement - who takes over the academy. Given the significance of our youths and reserves for the first team in the next few seasons (hopefully!) these appointments are very very important.

Good to see Carl "JT" Magnay back at last.

As you say, Sinclair in the squad so no CL action for him. I really hope that Scott gets a first team opportunity soon. Iīm sure his confidence is knocked at the moment and we donīt want him to get too affected pyschologically.

This is gonna smack of 100% irony. Brendan Rodgers in the last couple of years is the only Chelsea manager to promote the kids to a higher level.

Well, we should really see once and for all just how effective (or not) the new youth structure is during the next 1-2 seasons.

We were in the youth cup final for the first time in donkeyīs years and Brendan himnself said that the first wouldnīt be ready to break through untill 2010-11.

Just looked at the reserve table and WBA are bottom. They are obviously fighting for their lives to add to the 3 points they have so far and make it look more respectable.

Maybe in the 2nd half they will drop off...

Hmmm...

I wonder why we had such an off day? It happens I suppose...

Still, we do have key players out on loan - but then again so do the likes of Arsenal.

Hopefully "our" Brendan can poach some of your kids albeit on loan to steer our team back up the table.

Could Watford become a feeder club for Chelski?

More of a case of us feeding you (albeit with our youngsters). Iīve actually just heard a rumour that he has already agreed a loan deal for one of our kids today (donīt know who yet).

This "partnership" idea that Brendan has is shoudl work well for both clubs; Watford get cheap, quality youngsters to boost their side whilst we get to to give our kids meaninful experience of league football which they donīt get playing for the academy or the reserves (plus that donīt have that far to travel!).
