Chelsea 1-1 Burnley AET (Burnley win 5-4 on pens)

Ray Wilkins said in his pre-match press conference, "We need to show Burnley the utmost respect." Unfortunately Chelsea did not show Burnley the respect they deserved, although Burnley would argue otherwise because of their wonderful acheivement, and the reason? Chelsea decided to leave Captain John Terry out of the starting eleven and leave him on the bench as an unused substitute.

For me that decision was the beginning of the end of Chelsea's night.

Without John Terry taking up his usual position at the start of the game, meant Chelsea on the pitch didn't have a leader.

OK there maybe were eleven highly paid footballers on the park with a job to do, but no-one could stake a claim to lead a team in half as a mould as John Terry.

Chelsea made wholesale changes to the side that started at Blackburn.

In came Carlo, Paulo, Ivanovic, Mineiro, Drogba and Belletti.

After twenty odd minutes Belletti went off to be replaced by Super Frank and within seconds, Frankie set up Drogba who scored with a fine finish to put Chelsea 1-0 up.

Whilst celebrating at the away end, coins and other rubbish were thrown towards 'The Drog' and in a moment of madness Drog threw a coin viciously back into the away end.

Burnley Dids

After the game, Didier issued this apology. He said "This is something I want to make clear. I tried to celebrate the goal and I received some things at me.

"The big mistake I did was to throw it back so if someone was hurt I just want to apologise for it.

"This is not something I should show in a football match and I want to apologise. It was an incident in the heat of the moment and I regret it.

"It was just a mistake and nothing more."

This incident will rumble on and on I fear.

Akinbiyi equalised from close range after Carlo parried a cross into his path.

Chelsea had already hit the bar, Di Santo struck a fizzer which went just wide and then just into the start of extra-time he limped off with a hamstring injury leaving Chelsea with ten men, after all the subs had been used.

Alex missed an absolute sitter right at the death and then we were off on penalties.

At this point I made a decision to leave, missing the shoot-out completely as we are rubbish, our last shoot out success was over a decade ago at Ipswich.

Point proved as Captain for the night Wayne Bridge missed his and Mikel had his brilliantly saved by Jensen.

Burnley 3

CONGRATULATIONS TO BURNLEY, they rode their luck at times but they battled and scrapped and despite they had their Captain sent-off, six minutes from the end of extra-time, they held on to send the 6,000 odd Claret and Blue fans packed in The Shed home, extremely happy.

I was more or less satisfied with the line-up when it was announced although slightly disappointed that Sinclair didn’t get a run out. That said I don’t think Scolari could have expected the 2 injuries to Belletti and Di Santo. However, very good point re Terry missing and the lack of leadership on the pitch.

Di Santo was apparently lively for the few minutes he was on and his forced withdrawal leaving us with 10 men for extra time didn’t help. I don’t think Scolari could have budgeted for both Belletti and Di Santo to get crocked so being left with 10 men could probably not have been avoided.

I didn’t actually SEE the game so I had to content myself with radio commentary and comments from other Chelsea fans that had been at the match.

Malouda, Cuducini and Bridge apparently had bad games, some praise Mineiro – others don’t, whilst Alex, Ivanovic and Mikel came away with some credit and chances were missed by Kalou, Alex and Di Santo - the players should have killed the game off.

The negatives were, well, it’s never nice to lose, but thankfully, again, it happened in a match that is one of the less important of the season.

The whole Drogba affair with the racial abuse and coins being thrown at him does subtract from the image of humility of the Burnley fans that I had (make that some Burnley fans) and Drogba should know better than to respond in the way he did. Pro footballers are prone to abuse from the plebeian masses and should know better, that said, any punishment sought out against Drogba should be pursued with equal enthusiasm against the Burnley fans responsible. (Jamie Carragher suffered a ban for his troubles in one match although I’m not sure if the morons who started it all were ever punished).

The positives are that Scolari would have learned a bit more about who’s not up to scratch for this squad and of course, less distraction for much more important games ahead of us this season.

Well done to Burnley though. Whilst 5th place in the Championship hardly makes them minnows, we didn’t take our chances whilst they held and eventually came away with a victory providing a memorable day out for their fans

I live by this when it comes to shoot-outs.

We didn't lose the game, we lost the competition and have done for the last SIX attempts.

Beggars belief to be honest(Sm95)

Di Santo was full of running and energy when he came on - all he needs is a goal and he will BLOOM

But I remember saying the same type of thing about Robert Fleck, Chris Sutton, Kezman, Sheva............

perhaps I should keep me thoughts to myself

THIS PLACE IS CURSED

Me and Dixie are used to it

We are old skool

Wot DD did was wrong, but the same applies to the fan or fans who threw the coins in the first place and Owen Coyle has said today that Burnley will find the culprits and ban them for life.
