A Win A Loss and a Draw Against Man Utd

Flying High in NY

November 8 2008
After their last game against Portsmouth last Saturday, the Academy flew out to New York to play in the 16th Annual Newark International Cup and so far the boys have played two matches, winning one and losing one. Their first game was against Trinidad and Tobago and the boys ran out resounding 4-1 winners with the goals being scored by Frank Nouble (2), Billy Knott and Marko Mitrovic.

Coach Paul Clement said "The performance was satisfactory, no more than that, but to get a score like that against a national federation, however small the nation, is a good result."

In their 2nd game the Academy lost 3-1 to Mexico, despite the Academy taking the lead through Daniel Philliskirk.

This was a game that left Clement disappointed but looking forward to playing Mexico again should the Academy win their last game against St Benedict's Prep and secure a place in the final.

Clement said, "It was a harsh lesson for the boys but a fantastic experience as there was a lot to deal with. A win in our last group game will put us into the final and we hope to play Mexico again."

The draw for the FA Youth Cup has been made and the Academy have been drawn away to Man Utd.

No doubt Chelsea TV will cover the game live and it is expected the game will be played at Altrincham FC.

The tie must be played by Saturday 13th December.

The game kicks off 2pm local time (7pm UK time). A win will put the boys in tomorrow's final.

Sounds like a really excellent experience for our kids. Full marks to the club for arranging it.

No matter who the Academy play they will always benefit from it, but to go to New York and get paid for it, now that is an experience

Sometimes you wonder if the 1st team can benefit from the reserves and Academy, you know the hunger and desire. Just a point.

I know exactly where you´re coming from.

There have been a few times this season where we could have easily afforded a run out for some (Stoch, Sinclair...shame Kakuta is just back from injury) but we haven´t. That said Scolari has also had to try and get various players fit (eg Drogba). Bit of a balancing act I suppose.

I´d be very disappointed if 3-4 don´t get the odd decent game before the end of the season - and you never know, one might "take", surprise us with his confidence and therefore we end up with another string to our bow.

I always remember Osgood saying that when he was a kid in the reserves Docherty said to him "Right son! You´ve got 6 games in a row and I won´t drop you" - the result is history.

Going from the previous match against Mexico it should be an excellent tough test for us.

Well whatever happens if the lads don't learn and enjoy the experience and benefit from playing football in another country especially at their ages: 16, 17, then they don't deserve to be wearing the famous blue shirt.
