Youth & Reserves Nş 7: Gael Kakuta + Video

GAEL KAKUTA

In the modern era of expensive player transfers many football supporters often lament the fact that virtually no youth players break through and become first team regulars. If you want talent it almost always has to be purchased for an exorbitant sum as the finished article whilst the flower of your own clubs youth disappears into obscurity – Gael Kakuta will be the exception to that rule.

Gael was purchased for the princely sum of £20,000 from Lens at 15 years of age (in fact, Chelsea weren’t obliged to pay any fee to Lens but did so as a “Thank you” anyway) and he could well be the most spectacular bit of business in our club’s history.  He is one of the most skilful young players you will ever see.

There have recently been murmurings of discontent from the Stamford Bridge faithful with regard to the effectiveness of Arnesen´s network - Gael Kakuta could well be one prospect that enables the Dane to shift a little bit easier in his chair.

The young Frenchman, born in June 1991, really has demonstrated prodigious ability in Chelsea’s academy matches.  Described as an attacking midfielder Gael can play in midfield, just behind the strikers or even out wide and as is the case of other of the more talented academy players, he will soon play a major role in the reserve side.

Gael, a left-footer, was voted Academy Scholar of the Year by staff and players and weighed in with 12 goals in 20 appearances + 4 as substitute.  He has been recognised by his country appearing regularly in the French U17 side which reached the Euro Final last season.

Such is his talent that one (presumably) Arsenal fan hacked into Sky News and put up a report that he was dissatisfied with a terrible atmosphere at Chelsea Football Club and craved a move to Arsenal!  (The report lasted about an hour or so on the Sky website before it was taken down).

Lampard has already praised Kakuta:

"I am very excited about our youngsters. There is some great talent in the youth team. Hopefully, they can develop and be with us in the first team squad for years to come.”

"I think Kakuta stands out for his ability. His natural talent for someone who is just 16 is amazing and Stoch is also impressive.”

"Playing on the big occasions at the big stadiums is what it's all about and this will give them a taste. They just have to make sure they don't freeze and I have every confidence in them."

Academy Director Neil Bath predicts that it will be another two years before anyone from the youth team will break through into the first team:

"We hope to see players breaking into the senior squad from 2010 and reaching the final (FA Youth Final last season) shows we are going in the right direction."

Such is the youngster’s talent that there are already some Chelsea fans who would dearly love to see Gael get a run out NOW in the first team.  With a squad bloated with such quality that gives you an idea of just how good Kakuta is.  Whenever it happens, I’m certainly looking forward to it.
