Roma Away Preview: Stormy Times

BIG EARS IN ALL HER GLORY
By dixon9
November 3 2008
Tomorrow against Roma is our last away game of the group stage – 3 points in the Stadio Olimpico would give us guaranteed qualification. Our opposition are immersed in troubled times – 17th in Serie A, five defeats in a row, lost four of their last five CL games, economical difficulties, calls for Spalletti´s head and unsavoury incidents with the Roma fans at the team’s training ground yesterday.

All this is a far cry from last season when they were just minutes away from winning Serie A and a campaign of adventurous, solid football.  What’s gone wrong for Roma?  Who can put their finger on it?

Spalletti PENSIVE

Luciano Spalletti: Not a happy chappie

Whatever the reason we need to take advantage of a side that will have to come out and have a go at us.

If results don’t go their way they could be out the CL so it remains to be seen that with all considered, we face a dangerous, wounded animal or a side resigned to failure at the first sign of defeat.  An early goal from us could see their heads drop - to the contrary might galvanise their determination not to lose THIS one.

Totti is in the squad but is doubtful to last 90 mins so we may well see Spalletti save him as an ace card whilst midfielder Alberto Aquilani is still struggling with a thigh injury.

Baptista hasn’t played for a while so may also be on the bench but our old friend Riise should play.

For ourselves Drogba is in the squad after his brief gamble about on the Stamford Bridge turf on Saturday against Sunderland.

"I want him to come back step by step," said Scolari.

"I have in my mind a little time for him to play against Roma. He has played only one or two games in three months now, so we have to give him 15 to 20 minutes here and there."

Ashley Cole is out after suffering a slight calf muscle tear and will be replaced by his able deputy Wayne “that goal at Highbury” Bridge.

Carvalho faces another month on the sidelines

It will be one month for Carvalho, its two weeks minimum without training, then recovery work,” confirmed Scolari.

"He'll play for us after a month. He'll be a big loss. When I bring one player back, I lose another. That's how it's going for me at the moment at Chelsea."

Midfielders Ballack (foot) and Essien (knee) will obviously remain out

Stormy weather predicted for tomorrow in Rome – and I’ve a feeling we could be witness to a very stormy game.

I read that Roma's coach and players families including children are being targeted by 'irate' fans - especially the children when they go to school.

If we can repeat our last visit to the Stadium when we beat Lazio 4-0, happy days and then we have got a long rest till Blackburn on Sunday.

2009 HAPPY NEW YEAR

Be nice to guarantee qualification.

Just got a feeling it could get REALLY nasty on the pitch if things don´t go their way.

As you pointed out the other day - our fans need to take care.

Pre-match quotes:

Scolari
Despite the Londoners' impressive results both domestically and in Europe – where they have seven points from
three outings – Scolari refuses to accept that Chelsea are better than last season when they finished runners-up in
the two main competitions. "We are not better, because to do that we have to get to finals and win them," he said. "I
think Chelsea are one of the best ten teams in the world, but not yet the first."

Spalletti
"More than technical or tactical, I think the problem is mental," said Spalletti. "Our players need to maintain their
self-belief. Producing fear is not the answer ... I don't have to intimidate my team to get results – that's the worst thing a coach can do." The 49-year-old added: "The Chelsea game is crucial because, depending on the result, it will affect our performances in the coming matches against Bologna [FC] and [S.S.] Lazio. I've had tough times before in my career, but my future is at Roma."

"Until the last 15 minutes, when John Terry scored, we matched them," the Tuscan said of the 1-0 loss. "It's not about counterattacking, we need to be solid and play as a group. That is the way to stop Chelsea."

De Rossi
The Giallorossi may have lost two of their three Group A matches, including a 1-0 defeat in London a fortnight ago,
but De Rossi spoke passionately on the eve of Matchday 4 as he recalled past successes against the likes of Real
Madrid CF and Olympique Lyonnais. "We can do a lot better," he said. "In the last two years we have beaten Madrid
and Lyon. Chelsea may be one of, if not the, strongest teams in the world but if we can show that Roma again, I know
we can win."

"I can't explain what has gone wrong," continued the 25-year-old Italian international. "It's like a vicious circle of problems – technical, tactical, even physical ones. What we need to do is our own jobs, and stop blaming others. It's melodramatic to say we're playing for the coach. The players, the coach and the management all need to pull together."

"We played well over there. They've been scoring
at will – three, four, five goals a game in the Premier League. We kept them at bay for most of our match and I think
we were unlucky to lose. It's going to be tough, there's no doubt about that, as they have probably the strongest squad
in the world. They may have changed coach but [Frank] Lampard, [John] Terry, [Didier] Drogba and their goalkeeper
[Petr Čech], to name a few, are all world-class players."

With Totti battling for fitness, De Rossi is adamant that Roma need to press on without their own star man. "We want
him to be properly fit – it's no good him coming back for one game but then being out for three," said the Roma
academy product. "We also need to remember how to win without him, as we did last season."
