Except Steve Sidwell now at Aston Villa, Ben Haim now at Man City and 'legend' Claude Makelele at PSG. According to John Obi Mikel, Scolari has brought a swagger back to Chelsea in the month that he has been in charge. Scolari's first competitive game is on Sunday against Portsmouth at Stamford Bridge, kick-off at 1.30pm.

Mikel said "Everyone has been very impressed by the new manager. He's got a good character and is always talking to the players, asking us how we feel and, if we have a problem, whether he can help in any way.

"He's already shown that he wants us to play in a lot of different systems and formations. He's very versatile and wants us to be able to adapt our play more.

"I'm loving playing under the new manager, even if it's largely been in training and friendly games so far. Everyone is looking forward to playing for him."

Mikel spoke of the departure of Makelele to PSG.

He said, "I suppose Makelele's departure has opened a door for me to get a long run in the team. I was in and out of the side during Grant's time and that was a bit frustrating because when I'd been given the chance by Jose Mourinho I'd done OK in the holding role.

"So this time, under the new boss, I will try to make it my position in the team each week."

Over recent weeks, Michael Essien, Petr Cech and Wayne Bridge have all signed new contracts and the 'World Exclusive' announcement this afternoon, Frank Lampard has signed a new contract which he hopes will see him end his career at Stamford Bridge.

How Scolari will accommodate Essien, Ballack, Lampard, Deco, Mikel all in the same midfield, without width remains to be seen.

I for one cannot wait to see Scolari's first team selection on Sunday - Who is in!!! Who is out!! and WHO will be a 'benchwarmer!!!'

We have never had it so good and with Scolari we can at last begin to lift the solemness after losing Mourinho.

Mikel´s comments on Scolari´s man management and willingness to use different styles is heartening.

We are in for some great seasons ahead!

we need a quick start wicth man utd and arsenal not yet at full strength.
I will be happy with 12-13 points from the first 5 games.

Looking at those first five games, there is no reason why we can't get 15 points.

I´d be happy with that.

To be honest, I was expecting us to get off to a slow start with a new manager and new systems but the way we played in pre-season makes me more optimistic.

I would love us to get 15 points from our first 5 games but with a tricky trip to man city and 2 tough home games against spurs and utd i cant see us winning our first 5 games.

Portsmouth (h) win
Wigan (a) win
Spurs (h) sneak a 1-0
Man city (a) win
Man utd (h) draw

that leaves us with 13 points and probably 1/2nd place. I expect arsenal to be leading as the fixtures have been kind to them.

I think chelsea will win all their games over the christams period and that where i expect us to really gain momentum with trips to bolton everton and fulham and home games v westham and west brom.
