The media claim that one of the reasons Abramovich wasn’t happy with Mourinho was because he often courted controversy – rubbing the establishment up the wrong way wasn’t good for our image and our “global brand” (We’re not a brand – we’re Chelsea aren’t we? – Ed).

Now, for the first time we find Uncle Avram (or “Gravy boy” as Since 66 has dubbed him!) in Mourinho territory - but whilst Grant could be pictured in the headmaster’s office, head bowed, awaiting his punishment, Mourinho could have been depicted as the mischievous schoolboy, socks rolled down, shirt not tucked in on purpose ready with a cheeky reply despite the headmaster flexing his birch.
Grant insinuated that Man Utd received preferential treatment (or “coincidences” as he put it) at crucial stages of the season and also stated that one Premier League manager also warned him that these “coincidences” were going to happen before the Wigan match took place!
First up was the very harsh sending off of Mikel in the 32nd min of the first half whilst we were looking good despite missing key players. We were out of the game with only 10 men and Man Utd went on to win 2-0.
"I think that in the game we played against United at Old Trafford the referee changed the result for sure. We know that. The red card for Mikel was not a red card.”
Against Wigan, Scholes was already on a yellow in the first half – later he blocked the same player yet referee Bennett “bottled” the 2nd yellow. Ferdinand then handled after leaning in to block a shot yet no penalty was awarded.
"There should have been a red card for Scholes on Sunday. Then there was the penalty but it's finished. I congratulate United.”
"I do not think the world is against Chelsea, or English football, but in this case there were some coincidences for Manchester United."
"I looked at the game and (the referee) was, as expected, good for one team. I believe in the tradition of the fair English game. I will not say anything against this but what happened is what I expected."
Ferguson later countered, arguing that this was mind games from Grant in order to try and influence the refereeing on Wednesday for the Champions League Final (completely different authorities - but there you go!):
"This is about next Wednesday and that's why Avram is talking that way. I don't think it's about last Sunday, I think it's about next Wednesday, maybe even next season.”
"I could have gone on and on and on with decisions because they're all debatable at the end of the day. We feel we didn't get a lot of decisions this season.
"Maybe when we went to Chelsea we should have been champions before that but now the season's over, we'll put it to the back burner."
However, Wigan manager Steve Bruce’s comments just after their match against Man Utd back Grant:
"You should ask the referee about his integrity, not my team. I just think it was fortunate there was nothing riding on it for us.
"You have to question the referee. He made two or three horrific decisions in the first half and when people see it on TV they will agree because they were outrageous decisions."
"Paul Scholes is a fantastic player and one of Manchester United's all-time greats but he knows he got away with it today. He should have been sent off!"
As for the non-pen decision Bruce was in equally satirical mood:
“And to say the penalty awarded against us was harsh is an understatement. That's three important decisions, which is frustrating to say the least - It was surprising Rio didn't have gloves on to try and catch it."
I wonder if ol Brucy is allowed into the hearing as a witness?
Whatever happens, I think we can expect that ol Avram will end up with a sore bottom!
