So what’s all this then? We “nearly” signed someone – just like Spurs in the past – and from, ironically, Spurs?!!!
When asked about Anelka and Berbatov at the beginning of this month Grant said:
"They are both players that I like and a team like Chelsea should have more forwards."
Obviously, the financial demands made were deemed excessive:
"We did not want to stay with one striker and we put Shaun Wright-Phillips in midfield and he succeeded but he is not a midfield player. First it is a matter of money but not only that.
"We are looking for quality and we are looking at the future of the club. I am pleased I have got value for money with the players I have bought and very happy with the backing I have had.
"It is not easy buying players when you are Chelsea. You are looking for the best quality, best personality, attitude and character. It is difficult and there is a lot of pressure of money, pressure to win and you need a positive personality.
As for any last minute transfer activity before the close of the January transfer window:
"To find this combination in one person isn't easy. This is the reason I wanted two more players. We have only two days left of the transfer window and I never stop looking but basically I am happy.
"We do not need to rush and did not when we had big problems. I am 90 per cent sure that we will stay as we are and I am very happy with the squad."
Berbatov is seen by many as a luxury player to have in the squad and has a questionable attitude.
True, he has been a bit of a big game Charlie – turning it on when he knows all eyes are on him and some would question just how exactly he would fit into our squad.
Personally, I feel he is the most naturally talented player in the prem since Zola.
Abramovich wants flair and fireworks – so let’s go all out for him.
Should be interesting to see what happens in the summer.
