Right from the off forward Morten Nielsen almost got the first but Shrewsbury keeper Singh blocked quickly.
Sergio Tejara went close from a Miroslav Stoch cross and then Ben Gordon had a shot on goal.
Then on 23 minutes Jacob Mellis scored the opener after Kakuta´s back heel. Shrewsbury’s Aaron Brown let the blood rush to his head and was booked for a harsh foul on Mellis.
The away team hadn’t a shot on goal in the first half and this was testimony to our formidable back four of Patrick van Aanholt, Jeffrey Bruma, Gordon and captain Nana Ofori-Twumasi.
Shrewsbury had obviously been told to go in hard after being frustrated at the lack of possession and opportunities - Callum White was booked for flattening Michael Woods.
Chelsea's second goal came from a flowing move; Nielsen back heeled to Tejera who evaded a tackle and layed-off perfect for Mellis to finish with aplomb.
Miroslav Stoch, our pocket battleship forward brought a great save out of Singh with a sizzler which was just tipped wide.

Woods, our possible future Paul Scholes (not just because of his appearance) was again clattered, earning Ashbury his sides 3rd booking after only just coming on.
Singh made a further excellent save after good work from Philip and Kakuta´s curling shot was tipped over.
Then an error from the excellent Singh came after Van Aanholt's powerful shot slipped surprisingly through the keepers hands and legs to go over the line making it 3-0.
Shrewsbury’s kids then rallied and had their only shot on target cleared off the line by Mellis who had ran back to help defend.
Stoppage time arrived and Miroslav Stoch had two chances but midfielder Woods scored the fourth with a fine 25 yarder.
