Sam plays in the U19 England squad along with fellow Chelsea reserves Ryan Bertrand (on loan to Oldham Athletic), Jack Cork (on loan to Scunthorpe United), Lee Sawyer and Scott Sinclair.

José Mourinho gave Sam his first team debut last season when he came on as a substitute against Everton at Stamford Bridge and said that the he would be looking to incorporate the youngster in the first team squad in the near future. Sam was also selected to go on the first team pre-season tour of the United States in the summer.
Having already completed 3 full-time years at Chelsea and turned pro in August 2006, he signed a new 4 year contract on August 20, 2007 which means that he should be at the Bridge until at least 2011.
Sam looks very capable and solid but it remains to be seen how long it will take him to break into the first team on a regular basis, The advantage he has is that he is flexible in that he can play at centre or right-back.
Of course, he has the likes of Ferreira and Belletti ahead of him in the pecking order although one of those could depart from the club if we sign Ivanovic who plays in the same positions as Sam.
He’s only 18 though and I expect it will be the youngster and the like of Ivanovic competing for the mentioned positions within a couple of seasons.
