Parade
True the campaign has been in abeyance for the last few years, but it's resuscitation is the sole property of Darren and can only be considered officially relaunched when announced in this glorious organ. How serious Arsenal America are about this issue I cannot tell, or whether "back to the drawing board" is US code for the "Chairman's vote of confidence".
There again it could be something to do with the US mindset.I remember asking in the US why darts were not popular? The reply was "it is a non-achievers game". Many Americans have little time for non-achievers - even less than most Man U fans (so you could be safe for another year Alex)- so it could be serious. There again its might be a circulation trick. A bit like the London Evening Standard. You know the headline "Rail Fares to Double Shock" followed inside by the proviso "over next twenty years". Too late you have bought it. Anyhow no one here, apart from our mate Darren, is likely to give Arsene a hard time.
But for those of you who missed the campaign the last time round here is repeat of the original story:
The Wenger Must Go Campaign
Every time I meet my mate Darren I ask him how the Wenger Must Go Campaign is going, which might explain why I don't see him that often.
It all started with Panathinaikos beating us 1-0, in Sept 2001, in Athens. We were crap, no other description will fit. Darren was extremely pissed off and the criticism of Wenger and Europe was raised by the clientele of the Irish pub we were watching in (nothing new is there?).
Meanwhile Arsene was dilly dallying over signing his contract, the press speculated that Arsene would go, to make matters worse we had a crap November that started in October with 4 draws in the league between Oct 20 and Nov 17. We were also beaten by Charlton, Darren became convinced Wenger should be told to go. I can't prove it, but I was told he was not the only one moaning in this way. Thus started the joke that when I ever saw Darren I asked how the Wenger Must Go Campaign was going.
Mind you there is an happy ending, Wenger signed his contract, on November 25th we thrashed Manure 3-1, oh and we won the double. The campaign never got off the ground, though Darren claims he has the leaflets ready if need be.
