Late Winner
In an exclusive interview with Arsenal Times Wenger explained that the team had played with the handbrake on in the first half. At the start of the second half he instructed them to take it off; unfortunately some bastard traffic warden had clamped them for being constantly parked in parallel lines so it made no difference.
Arsenal were also a little nervous, they feared that Crouch might score, and if anything really upsets Adebayor and Eboue its having to watch tall white men who can't dance properly celebrate a goal. Fortunately Pat Rice thought up a cunning plan to break the deadlock. He shouted out, "Billy, you were right and we were wrong? You are a great captain?"
Once a leader - Gallas scores the winner
Billy doesn't do irony and thought his glorious legacy had been rehabilitated. In gratitude he demonstrated to Bendtner and Adebayor how you actually power a header home.
The crowd showed their gratitude by singing the managers name in the closing minutes. That really pissed Wenger off as his name isn't Tony Adams.
Seriously
Joking apart this was a piss poor game with neither side doing very much. Portsmouth had come to park the bus, and who can blame them after a 4-1 thrashing by the Hammers? I don't think Arsenal had more than two shots in the first half, if that. The second half was equally pants, until late substitutions of Vela and Ramsey put a spark of life into the team. Vela in particular began to twist the Pompey defence about. He wasn't scared of getting behind the Portsmouth defence. Something most of the Arsenal team had avoided up till then.
Indeed Bendtner and Ade were particularly ineffective, and Nasri had the weight of the whole central midfield on his shoulders. However the team finally roused itself for the 81 minute winner, and then entertained the crowd by showing they do know how to defend a lead after all. It would be ungracious to say they nearly cocked it up, a wins a win.
Meanwhile Wenger stated that he might buy during the transfer window. But if he does it will be players of experience. Wow that's radical; couldn't we just have a few more kids?
