After Arsenal went two-one up his team didn't have a shot on target, actually I don't think Chelsea had a shot on target all match (they did have a header on target. Ed). Their one accredited shot on target was by Djourou. So let's get back to our theme - what difference did this fine English yeoman make to the match? Well of course I am biased, but to me it appeared to be feck all.
According to Redknapp and Gullit it wasn't an Englishman who was central to the result, but the missing Drogba, all the analysis, well most of it, was about the missing striker.
I was just about to cry with sympathy into my J20 when I suddenly remembered that this club has spent nearly £500 million on players, but can't cope if a couple of stars are out. No sympathy for Arsenal who have had up to nine first choice players missing this season.
A Great Captain Wins it For Arsenal
So which captain made all the difference? Why Puskas of course, the greatest captain I have ever seen. Yes I know he wasn't playing, but I was wearing my brand new Captain of Hungary T shirt and I am sure it shifted our luck. Fabregas could do far worse than look to Puskas as a role model.
Of course RvP got man of the match, although it's a pity defenders are rarely recognised, for Sagna, Gallas and Clichy were magnificent. Djourou was unfortunate to give away the goal, though Almunia must accept much of the blame. However another candidate must be Fabregas, he might not have stood out in terms of shots, or even assists, but what he did do was create time and space at a time when Arsenal were under frenetic attack by Chelsea. However his contribution is greater than that, he has brought this team together; he has helped heal the rifts in the dressing room. He went out of his way to embrace Gallas at the start of the match. He has Arsenal in his blood, he started the recovery against Kyiv, but Chelsea aren't Kyiv; but Captain Fabregas didn't sit on the fence he made it clear that Arsenal do not go anywhere for a draw, they only ever play for a win.
It was a rallying cry that got its deserved response; of course there is still a long way to go. Can Fabregas cure this team of its inconsistency? If he can then he will stand in the pantheon of greats, and they don't come much greater than Puskas.
This was a well deserved victory by Arsenal, the first goal was probably off side, but Chelsea had their luck when they were gifted their goal. They didn't deserve anything out of this game, yes they added to it as spectacle of attacking football, but their attack was toothless. Nonetheless, to be fair, that was partly due to the Arsenal defence being expertly marshalled by Gallas.
The Gunners also defended as a team, true they missed out on that a bit in the first half, and perhaps for a brief spell in the second, but most of the match was a team effort that thwarted Chelsea's attack, and created plenty of chances in return. It was hard work and spirit, just as much as the brilliance of RvP that won it. Wenger is right you need eleven leaders, today Gunners got them.
