A Great Captain Wins it For Arsenal

The press seems obsessed about captains, apparently all victories are down to captains. Chelsea and England, according to the press have a great one. I won't mention his name here, but he didn't have a great game did he? He was lucky not to be the second Chelsea player sent off in a week. His team's spineless second half performance must have been most distressing for him.

After Arsenal went two-one up his team didn't have a shot on target, actually I don't think Chelsea had a shot on target all match (they did have a header on target. Ed). Their one accredited shot on target was by Djourou. So let's get back to our theme - what difference did this fine English yeoman make to the match? Well of course I am biased, but to me it appeared to be feck all.

According to Redknapp and Gullit it wasn't an Englishman who was central to the result, but the missing Drogba, all the analysis, well most of it, was about the missing striker.

I was just about to cry with sympathy into my J20 when I suddenly remembered that this club has spent nearly £500 million on players, but can't cope if a couple of stars are out. No sympathy for Arsenal who have had up to nine first choice players missing this season.

A Great Captain Wins it For Arsenal

So which captain made all the difference? Why Puskas of course, the greatest captain I have ever seen. Yes I know he wasn't playing, but I was wearing my brand new Captain of Hungary T shirt and I am sure it shifted our luck. Fabregas could do far worse than look to Puskas as a role model.

Of course RvP got man of the match, although it's a pity defenders are rarely recognised, for Sagna, Gallas and Clichy were magnificent. Djourou was unfortunate to give away the goal, though Almunia must accept much of the blame. However another candidate must be Fabregas, he might not have stood out in terms of shots, or even assists, but what he did do was create time and space at a time when Arsenal were under frenetic attack by Chelsea.

However his contribution is greater than that, he has brought this team together; he has helped heal the rifts in the dressing room. He went out of his way to embrace Gallas at the start of the match. He has Arsenal in his blood, he started the recovery against Kyiv, but Chelsea aren't Kyiv; but Captain Fabregas didn't sit on the fence he made it clear that Arsenal do not go anywhere for a draw, they only ever play for a win.

It was a rallying cry that got its deserved response; of course there is still a long way to go. Can Fabregas cure this team of its inconsistency? If he can then he will stand in the pantheon of greats, and they don't come much greater than Puskas.

This was a well deserved victory by Arsenal, the first goal was probably off side, but Chelsea had their luck when they were gifted their goal. They didn't deserve anything out of this game, yes they added to it as spectacle of attacking football, but their attack was toothless. Nonetheless, to be fair, that was partly due to the Arsenal defence being expertly marshalled by Gallas.

The Gunners also defended as a team, true they missed out on that a bit in the first half, and perhaps for a brief spell in the second, but most of the match was a team effort that thwarted Chelsea's attack, and created plenty of chances in return. It was hard work and spirit, just as much as the brilliance of RvP that won it. Wenger is right you need eleven leaders, today Gunners got them.

I forgot to add that about 3 years ago RvP scored a perfectly good goal against Chavs and it was ruled offisde.
So they owed us one

Padre; i was about to point that out.that the law of karma finally caught up with chelsea.RVP scored that perfect goal which was ruled as an offside and Karma made sure justice was served.who cares if it was offside.the issue is that Arsenal suprised everyone with a victory including ME!!!!

Gallas was great.[i feel he is a misunderstood player]

Scolari can rant all he can, the game is over and the points are in the bags.

I also wonder is Cesc is the tonic but i have to wait till we play a bottom or mid table team to conclude. For me CESC is the right choice and should have been made captain instead of gallas who didn't know the culture of our club.

is this team cured.no;it's still unbalanced and we still need a good and tough tackling DM to compliment cesc.we may see flashes of the old cesc but i fear untill he gets a real DM partner we will only see flashes of him.Wenger should know that winning a trophy without a DM is the toughest most crazy thing to dream about in football.please i don't want to hear about song cos he is just a reserve player and should not be cesc's 1st choice partner.denilson is not a DM and even if wenger plays him in that position all he would be doing is to nollify cesc's true worth.

"We defend as a Unit,
We attack as a Unit,
We are always talking to each other"

Anybody can comment on that match that the players are talking to each other as a TEAM?

He can improve but i really doubt that he should be a regular.he is a reserve player to me.not the best patrner for cesc/ denilson/diaby cos to me those 3 are the same kind of players and not DM's

C'mon, AJ.if it takes Flamini 4 seasons to show his value, Song still got 3 more seasons to go to prove his value and fulfils his potential.

And how sh*tty Flamini was and we never understood what Wenger saw in Flamini?

Same for Denilson who is only playing in his first regular season.

Remember how sh*tty Fabregas was in his 2nd season when muscular midfielders like Papa Diop just simply ran through Fabregas who fell down as easily as Denilson now?

And how we moaned that Fabregas is just too "lightweight" and can NEVER repalced Vieira?

Cesc can never replace Vieira as they are 2 different types of player. Vieira is a box-to-box midfielder with excellent defensive and attacking qualities. Cesc is more of a passer of the ball looking for the openings to exploit.

ARSENAL’S stars have warned: We’re back in the title race.
The Gunners beat Chelsea in Sunday’s derby after two of the most turbulent weeks in the club’s history.

And two-goal hero Robin van Persie insists the in-fighting has been replaced by a common desire to win.

The Dutch forward said: “We showed a lot of self-belief and character to win against Chelsea.

“Everybody thought ‘OK, we can win this game if we fight and stick together’.

“That is what we did so it was a big compliment for the whole team.

“That is the answer we wanted to give our critics. The last couple of weeks had been very difficult — we’d been losing points. But if we stayed together and fought for every ball, we had a chance against Chelsea.

“There’s still a long way to go but we set a big, big example. I’m really happy about the team spirit as it’s been a frustrating time.”

But the message was similar after Arsenal beat Manchester United a couple of weeks ago — only to go on and lose at home to Aston Villa. Strike star Emmanuel Adebayor is aware of the need to find consistency.

He said: “We want to keep going until the end of the season. We know we have a good team and squad.

“We had a bad couple of days but everyone can see we want to keep alive our title dreams.

“The most important thing is to keep going.

“Sometimes you have a little bit more concentration against a big team.

“That’s one of the things we’re going to work very hard on in the days ahead and we’ll see what we can do against the lower teams.

“But it was very big win against Chelsea. We went through a lot of difficult moments, people wrote us off in the Premier League.

“Now we’ve sent out a message to every team that we believe in ourselves and we can do something.”

The SUn

**********************************************************

I felt that there is cause for optimism that even a "rebel" (hinted as that culprit that insulted team-mates on the pitch) like van Persie is acknowledging TEAM-WORK, TOGETHERNESS.

teh difference between post-ManLeeds victory and post-Chelski victory is Captain Fabregas.

Fabregas is that peace-maker, linking up a rebellious and arrogant Van Persie to a sulky Gallas at the other end.

it is nto whetehr fabreags is shouting, cajoling his team-mates on teh pitch, but hsi mere presence as a peace-maker, his desire to coagulate and meld all players into a winning team that so lifted the despondency and morale of the TEAM.

And with optimists like CLichy and Almunia supporting him, and with the Back-4 - Sagna-Djourou-Gallas-CLichy - finally palying as a UNIT, and with gallas showing what Wenegr actually saw in him, we are fast getting a solidly assembled Defence.

We have no porblem with attack as long as van Persie is playing out of his skin with a fierce desire to win, plus Adebayor winning headers and knock-downs for his co-striker.

DO not slag Song as his languid style led us to think he is lazy.
he is not.
Like Djourou, he is using his "football brain" to analyse the situaton, to anticipate, and as coached by Wenger, to cut-off space and intercept passes.

SImilarly, Denilson needs time to gell and vice-versa Fabregas.

But the captaincy apparently done no hamr to Fabregas' game, except to enhance him as a "peace-maker" to meld his fractious team-mates into a whole UNIT.

Nasri-SOng-Fabregas-Denilson is adequate till Rosicky, Eboue and Walcott are fit again.
But the importance is that Denilson is versatile and a good squad member. and he needs to improve as he facing fierce competition from youngsters eager to take his place:
- Bischoff, Ramsey, Wilshere, Merida, Coquelin, BAracrite, Randall, Lansbury - and Denilson can only improves.

And if rumors are correct and Wenger bids for Yaya Toure in Janaury 2009?

But the key point is that can this TEAM discovers CONSISTENCY and slaughters Wigan 7-0 this weekend?..(Sm6)

And yes, I am going to predict 7-0 this weekend as I feel that some day, a team will feel the full backlash when the TEAM releases all their previosu frustations onot a hapless Wigan to prove a point on their credence as a TITLE CHALLENGER.

****************************************************
MLG, there is no replacement for Vieira and Diaby is a bIG BIG LETDWON, never live up to his billing as the 2nd Coming fo Vieira. I feel that there is no future for Diaby.

Like Aliadiere, his time had come and gone with plenty of youngsters startign to overtake him to play in a Fabregas' TEAM:

Youngsters like Ramsey, Wilshere, Bischoff, Coquelin, Merida - more suitable to the new style of paly, rather than a Diaby who dwells on the ball, over-dribble and "blind alley" running.

When Fabregas masters the art of "long pass and short pass" and with felow midfielders giving him protection for that split-second of spotting a passing channel (liek that hof-ball to bendtner), then we will start to see the return of those "one-touch one pass" triangular passes when Hleb is in the team, as well as the French Spine.

There is still a dilemma:

How to best make use of Walcott blazing pace with plenty fo accurate long through balls between CB, as well as accurate passes when Walcott starts one of hsi diagonal runs that are so effective against Croatia?

and we need a Fabregas at his best to spot all those runs and play an accurate through ball.

let's hope that Nasri will be fully integrate intot eh TEAM by December and we then really have a MIDFIELD that will create 20+ scoring games in every game.

let's wait for Wigan game to observe how this TEAM will create 20+ scoring chances.

i wonder why anyone will pay attention to RVP.the guy is a natural rebel.have we forgotten he fought with his coach and team mates in his formar club.thankGOd fab knows how to tone him down.

Denilson isn't a bad player but the issue is that he and cesc are no DM's.song is the only candidate but frankly he is not good enough to compliment cesc, denilson or diaby.his game is too slow for our kind of fast passing pacey game.it's as simple as that.get a fast strong DM to even play with Denilson and you will be amazed at how he will shine.
