Silvestre Makes it Clear Its Centre Half

Fish face arrives
By Boris Mellor
August 20 2008
In an interview with ATVO Silvestre made it clear that he hasn't arrived at Arsenal to sit on the bench. He also believes that his injury spell is now behind him, and that he is fit and available to play. It was a big surprise that he is coming to Arsenal, but he feels it's a good surprise too.

  Where In The back four?

When asked about the back four he replied that he saw himself as a centre back, and he had spoken to Wenger about that. Interestingly he heaped praise on Clichy, but made no mention of Gallas or any other centre back. No doubt Wenger wants to ginger up his CBs.

Asked if his experience would be important off the pitch he was more concerned in stressing his on pitch role. He felt that his experience would help Arsenal youngsters with understanding that the Premiership was a marathon. However he stressed that Arsenal had led the league for most of the season and had been very unlucky at the end.

He had given good service to Manchester United so he was not surprised that Ferguson had allowed him his ideal move. He was not worried that the fans would give him a bad reception, they would understand that footballers move about (Not too sure about that one. Ed).  He had been loyal to Man U, now he would be loyal to Arsenal.

Wenger's plan?

Perhaps Wenger believes that Silvestre's experience can have the effect of gelling the team. He has said he would put experience in the back four if such a player became available. Joe Mercer was 34 in 1948 when the team won the league, in 1950 he captained Arsenal to cup victory over Liverpool, and he went on to win the League again in 1953 at the age of 38. So age is no barrier, but for every older experienced player who leads a team to victory there is the failure like Blanc (just ask Alex). But Arsene is entitled to give it a try; if it's a flop everyone can say I told you so. If the plan works they can all say we told you so - it was experience that was required.

Anyhow it will make trivia quizzes so much easier. Players going between these two proud clubs are few and far between. Now we all know the answer is 2008.

I think Toure will play DM then, he started as a DM for us didnt he and got sent off pretty early?

Maybe this was the signing Wenger meant before the 2nd leg. We need a proper DM.

"He had been loyal to Man U, now he would be loyal to Arsenal."

How is that possible.

I b.loody hope not!

IMO Senderos, Djourou and Song should be ahead of him at CB, let alone Toure and Gallas.

He should simply be a back up LB and an emergency CB and nothing else.

I still believe Senderos has no place wearing the No.6 and Song is still on trial in my book.

I think we signed him for under a £1m and with his wages over the two years I think it will add up somewhere between £3m-£5m, so its not that much money at all.

Honestly, ManU hate aside, I'm sort of glad with the signing. It adds depth and cover to the LB and CB position that we really needed.

we still paying him a good wage even if it was 1k we got him for 2 titles and its money well spent or money well saved which ever way you look st it.

You all forgot that we signed "Just recovered from Injury" Poom to sit on the bench as backup to Lehmann and ALmunia 'cos all those yougnsters are not ready?

SImilarly, you lots had been slagging Senderos, Djourou and SOng "too young"..and suddenly, we are signing a 31-year old warhorse - Gallas is 31-year old - with experience, with height and with aggression as well..you all started moaning we didn't give yougnsters a chance?

Did we sign Lehmann at 30 or 31-year old?

And after 2 unsuccessfuls eason, Wenegr had been pilloried by you lots Gallas-Kolo partnership is not working?

I agreed.
Gallas-Kolo is simply not working due to nature of Kolo game of a "headless chicken" easily dummied by strikers.

Wenger decided to bite the bullet and form a "big Man - Small Man" partnership in SIlvestre-Gallas to give him 2 years breathing space with the hope that one or two of these yougnsters will be ready in 2010/11 season:

1 - Senderos
2 - Djourou
3 - SOng
4 - Nordtveit
5 - Miguel
6 - Gavin Hoyte

Wenegr is not going to make the same mistake as rushing Senderos, Djourou and covnerting mdifielder to CB with title so nearly in his hands liek lasts eaosn.

Wenegr meant business now and ruthlessly dropped weak-link like Kolo, whether he likes it or not.

Anyway, it will allows plenty of rotation, and plenty of opportunities for Senderos, Djourou and SOng wihtou earing out the squad due to this 60-game seasons plus internaitonals which will involve all these yougnsters as well.

By squad rotation, I felt that all these youngsters - Senderos, DJourou & SOng - will get at least 10 to 20 games per this season.

Have you people notice for the past 2 seasons our CB are gettign injury-prone as well -
Gallas - out for hamstring & grion problem last season
Kolo - out for hamstring problem
Senderos - out for hamstring problem for past 2 seasons as wella s now.
DJourou - came back injured from BRUM....and ?

For past 2 seaosns and even thsi seaosn, Wenegr did not a decent spell where ALL CB are available for selection.

I said..good for him to snap up an experienced bargain to boost his squad with experience.

It does offer than option. Kolo can play DM, but a strict DM role, and not a holding role as he is not great at ball keeping/shielding, slowing the pace down.

Whatever is said and done, I really dont think this represents a bad piece of business at all. We must look above the "we are feeding off Manure's scrap" and realise that Mikaeal does offer us something good.

Where could we have bought an experienced, international CB who can also play across the back 4 when needed at a mere 750K??? I bet that Manure wouldn't even have priced him that low if they knew he was gonna end up with us. But since the deal was already agreed with the player for him to go for 750K, presumably to Sunderland or Man City, it would have been in bad taste for Manure to renege on the deal just because Arsenal came into the picture at the last minute.

I bet Fergie is seething inside.
