A manager, I have long forgotten his name, was asked why was his team were not more entertaining, he replied:
“If you want to see clowns go to the circus”. No doubt, he would now answer, “If you want to see clowns go and see Tottenham play”.
Over the last few years this fixture has been a draw, a draw that Spurs fans celebrate as if they have won the league. If it was not for the international break, and the shortage of centre backs, no Gallas and Senderos suspended, I would have expected that to change with a Gunners victory, but with Jol desperate, and Gilberto jetlagged, it could be a high scoring game.
Spurs fans started the season with very high hopes, and most, not all, have remained loyal to Jol. A defeat would probably destroy any good will that is left.
For Wenger it is far less crucial, his whole season does not depend on this one result, but he is increasingly antipathetic to a man, he may feel has been prepared to cheat in his sad attempts to outdo the Arsenal. Wenger wants the best start possible this season, and it is that rather than any local rivalry, or distaste for Jolba the Hutt, that will motivate him and his team.
