Jol’s Big Chance
By Boris Mellor
September 14 2007
At last, it is Jol’s big chance, not to win a CL spot, but to avoid the sack. Therefore, he will be desperate to win this one, more desperate than usual. Having spent millions, and even more millions, and only one league win, his start to the season is looking more and more shaky.

I do not normally watch Spurs play, but I could not resist the highlights of the game against Fulham, it was pure comedy. A manager, I have long forgotten his name, was asked why was his team were not more entertaining, he replied:

“If you want to see clowns go to the circus”. No doubt, he would now answer, “If you want to see clowns go and see Tottenham play”.

Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger (l) and Tottenham Hotspurs Martin Jol (r) on the touchline.

Over the last few years this fixture has been a draw, a draw that Spurs fans celebrate as if they have won the league. If it was not for the international break, and the shortage of centre backs, no Gallas and Senderos suspended, I would have expected that to change with a Gunners victory, but with Jol desperate, and Gilberto jetlagged, it could be a high scoring game.

Spurs fans started the season with very high hopes, and most, not all, have remained loyal to Jol. A defeat would probably destroy any good will that is left.

For Wenger it is far less crucial, his whole season does not depend on this one result, but he is increasingly antipathetic to a man, he may feel has been prepared to cheat in his sad attempts to outdo the Arsenal. Wenger wants the best start possible this season, and it is that rather than any local rivalry, or distaste for Jolba the Hutt, that will motivate him and his team.

"Over the last few years this fixture has been a draw, a draw that Spurs fans celebrate as if they have won the league".

"For Wenger it is far less crucial, his whole season does not depend on this one result",

There in lies the difference between tottenham and Arsenal fans. I expected an entertaining 2-2 draw with Spurs fans after the game claiming the gap is closing(Sm16)

Great article!! I agree it may be a high scoring game, and with the extra motivation the Tottenham players will have it will be a very hard game for us. I hope we can get a result becasue i dont want to see Liverpool pull away from us. There is one thing im concerned about Wenger said something like "Sagna is still sore but he should be OK to play" this could be a risk.

CMON ARSENAL!

I hope SPuds will attack us instead of palying defensively.
it will open their defence nciely for our quick counter-attack by Hleb and Rosicky, with Fabregas driving into the middle.

They can't man-marked Henry like alst time..'cos there is no more Henry, and who are they going to mark dead to stop Arsenal from scoring?
Fabregas? Hleb? Rosicky? Adebayor? Van Persie?

Arsenal are going to win, I am tired of all those guys predicting draws.
Plus, most Spuds are behind Jol coz the gaffer has no issues. It's the team. What do you expect him to do with such a bunch of mediocre players?
Defoe
Robinson
Bent
Rocha
Kaboul
Dawson

Arsène Wenger also said about him after Arsenal's 3-1 win over West Bromwich Albion (April 16, 2006) that Bergkamp had:

"Intelligence and class. Class is of course, most of the time linked to what you can do with the ball, but the intelligence makes you use the technique in an efficient way. It's like somebody who has a big vocabulary but he doesn't say intelligent words, and somebody who has a big vocabulary but he can talk intelligently, and that's what Dennis is all about. What he does, there's always a head and always a brain. And his technique allows him to do what he sees, and what he decides to do."

They've scored first for about 6-7 years in a row?
