Match Report: Hull City 1-0 Wednesday
By Nicholas Rigg December 10 2005
Hull City got payback for last seasons injury time defeat against the Owls thanks to an 86th minute goal by substitute Jason Price. Wednesday had dominated much of the game against a lack-lustre Hull side but were punished for the lack of attacking options by a scrappy late goal.

Hull City 1-0 Wednesday

Date:  Saturday 10th December

Venue: The KC Stadium, Hull

Hull City substitute Jason Price scored a late winner for the hosts as Hull continued to pull away from the relegation zone and Wednesday got dangerously close to entering the bottom three.

The scoreline was not a true reflection on the game, after Wednesday's domination failed to result in a goal, or even many clear cut chances.

Wednesday had not scored in three games before the match and so Paul Sturrock decided to go with a three-pronged attack with Lee Peacock and Daryl Murphy supporting David Graham up front. Steve Adams was also a surprise inclusion as he played alongside Glenn Whelen and Burton O'Brien in midfield. Richie Partridge missed out with an injury and Chris Brunt and Chris Eagles had to make do with a place on the bench. Nicky Weaver was playing his last game on-loan with the Owls behind the same back four that played at Bramall Lane last week.

Hull City welcomed back Boaz Myhill in goal after his suspension. Key man Stuart Elliot was also welcomed back to the bench.

The match was an open affair during the first 45 minutes, but neither side looked like opening the scoring. Wednesday had lots of posession but they lacked the killer instinct in the final third of the pitch - an area which Sturrock will be desperate to improve on when the transfer window opens again in January.

Probably the best chance of the half came just before the end of the first 45 minutes. A long cross found Lee Peacock unmarked in the Hull box and it looked like a simply pass would put David Graham in on goal, but Peacock scuffed the opportunity.

Glenn Whelen was replaced by Chris Brunt at half time after the Irish midfielder complained of a back problem. Assistant manager Kevin Summersaid said he hoped Whelen would be back in training towards the end of the week and be available for selection for next weeks game.

The second half had continued in the same manner that the first had ended - an open game with neither side creating any openings.

Wednesday seemed in control posession-wise and nearly found the breakthrough when Murphy neatly turned the Hull defender to chip a dangerous cross in to the Hull box. The cross baffled everybody though and was eventually put out for a corner.

At the other end Hull were finding it equally hard to break down a resiliant Wednesday defence but nearly got an opening through a lucky cross from substitute Price. His hanging cross had to be turned over the bar by Weaver.

It was clear that the game was fizzing out in to a 0-0 stalement and so Sturrock brought on the pacy Chris Eagles and Gaby Agbonlahor to replace Graham and Peacock respectfully.

The best chance of the game fell to Agbonlahor minutes after he came on the pitch. A scramble in the box lead to Myhill saving an Adams header. The ball fell to the ground and it looked like Agbonlahor just had to slot the ball home but defender Cort somehow managed to put the ball to safety.

Hull came back in to it in the last 10 minutes with Wednesdays engine looking to run out of fuel, and it was the 86th minute when the deadline was broken by substitute Price.

Wednesday had already been warned minutes earlier when the KC Stadium crowd thought they had the winner through a Stuart Elliot header but the Irish winger was deemed offside by the officials.

Price didn't make a mistake the second time though and slotted home from just 6-yards from a Stuart Elliot corner.

The goal was hard on Wednesday who dominated for long periods of the game but as usual failed to find that killer instinct in the final third of the pitch. But Hull fans will look at it as pay back for Wednesdays injury time winner at the Kc last season.

  • Wednesday manager Paul Sturrock admitted himself to hospital on his own accord after the match. Contrary to reports he did not collapse at the stadium, and just went to check up on himself after feeling unwell all week. Get well soon Paul!

Kevin Summerfield told BBC Sport:

"I can't remember Nicky Weaver having a shot to save before they scored, but you have to concentrate for 90 minutes.

"We are not playing badly but we are not scoring goals and we are not getting into scoring positions.

"We lack that killer instinct and we won't win games until we score goals."
