The Grey Horse - Accrington

For the friendly at Accrington on Saturday 8th July, The Longside recommends the Grey Horse pub on Whalley Road, Accrington.

The Grey Horse is just a stone’s throw away from the ‘Fraser Eagle Stadium’ but you would be best advised getting there early as the pub does tend to get busy on a matchday, and has been known to fill up when the Clarets come to town for the annual friendly at Accrington.

The Grey Horse certainly looked popular with Burnley fans last season as a number were drinking outside the pub before last year’s 3-0 win, and Clarets have tended to drink at the pub before games in the previous seasons.

The pub is a Thwaites pub and is recommended by the East Lancashire CAMRA, and serves a good pint of Thwaites Dark Mild for the ‘Real Ale’ drinkers out there. A few of the Longside posters have arranged to meet there so if you want to say hello, feel free, we won’t bite.

How to get there:

Those of you who know how to get to the Fraser Eagle Stadium will have no troubles finding the Grey Horse as it is on Whalley Road just before the turn-off to Livingston Road and the football ground.

By car:

For those of you who don’t know, you will need to leave the M65 at Junction 7 and at the roundabout join the A6185 towards Clitheroe (not towards Accrington!). At the first set of traffic lights turn right onto the A678, towards Padiham, and then at the next traffic lights, turn right onto the A680 towards Accrington.

After about half a mile along the A680 you will pass the Crown pub on your left. The next left is Livingstone Road where the ground is located, but ignore that and carry on and just a little bit further on your right you will see the Grey Horse.

By train:

It is advisable to get a taxi to the ground if you are going there straight from the station as Accrington train station is about a mile away from the ground.  Leave the station and travel down the slope towards the large viaduct roundabout in the centre of town. Take the Milnshaw Lane exit at the opposite side of the roundabout alongside the Perry's Peugeot dealership.

After approximately 100 metres this road then joins Whalley Road.  Bear left up the hill and follow Whalley Road for about a mile, passing the hospital, a set of traffic lights and then a mini roundabout.  Keep going on this road, and the pub will appear in your left.
