Michael Duff makes tough decision to leave but ready to become a manager

Michael Duff admits ending his lengthy Turf Moor stay is a wrench but feels the opportunity to launch his managerial career with former club Cheltenham Town is too good to miss.

Duff is leaving the Clarets after 14 years as player and coach to take over at the League Two Robins.

And his decision to leave Burnley – with the full backing of boss Sean Dyche – will take him back to Whaddon Road where he is also a long-time favourite after spending eight seasons there as a player and helping the Cheltenham gain promotion to the Football League in 1999.

Duff – who retired from playing in 2016 before going into coaching with the Clarets’ Academy set-up as he looked to pursue a managerial career – said: “A lot of things lined up at the right time. The opportunity came to me.

“I had to think long and hard because I’m in a good place at the minute. But it’s something that’s always been the long-term goal.

He has been outstanding for us over the years. I wish him all the best back at Cheltenham. Who knows what will happen in the future. He may well be back.

A truly fabulous servant to the club, I really hope he does well at Cheltenham, I can't see why he won't. Good Luck Duffo and thank you for all your years of loyal service.

Fantastic move for him and he will always be welcomed back at BFC. No doubt there will be a pre-season friendly in the future. I hope he has every success there.
