Burnley 1 Bournemouth 2

Chris Wood finished the season as the Clarets’ top scorer but his 11th goal of the season was not enough to propel Sean Dyche’s men into Europe on the back of a closing-day victory

As Bournemouth struck in injury-time to gain a first win at Turf Moor.

Record-buy Wood overtook Ashley Barnes to win the ‘golden boot’ at the end of a successful first season at Turf Moor.

And even though Joshua King’s second-half equaliser and Callum Wilson’s 93rd-minute strike denied the Clarets the perfect parting gift before their foray into Europe, there was no taking the gloss off a memorable season which ends with Burnley seventh in the Premier League.

The Clarets haven’t had it this good since 1974 and as the supporters applauded Dyche, his staff and players in a lap of honour at the end they know the next time they watch their team it will be in the Europa League at the end of July.

The return of Wood in place of the injured Barnes was the only change Dyche made to his starting line-up as the Clarets looked to go out on a high.

That meant – as expected – no playing farewell for departing midfield men Dean Marney and Scott Arfield as they reached the end of their magnificent Turf Moor careers.

By contrast, Young Player of the Year Dwight McNeil took another step towards launching his senior career with a late debut from the bench as the past, present and future aligned on a day of celebration.

Bournemouth’s incentive was to try and capture only a second away win in 13 games in the hope of securing a top-half finish and the extra revenue that’s awarded per place in the final league table.

Having never won at Turf Moor in 14 previous attempts, history was not on their side.

But Eddie Howe’s side started well on his return to his former club and went close to taking a 21st minute lead.

Absolutely fantastic season by the Clarets led by Mr Sean Dyche, totally unexpected to finish in 7th, just a wonderful wonderful job, just a shame we couldn't finish with a high today with an extra 3 points but no matter, no complaints from me when we are going on a European Tour. (Sm42)
