Connelly Rewarded After 43 Years

John Connelly finally received his World Cup Winners Medal after a period of 43 years, Connelly along with other members of the 1966 World Cup winners squad were presented with their winners medals yesterday by Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street, afterwards the members of the squad were guests of honour at the World Cup qualifier against Andorra at Wembley.

John Connelly finally received his World Cup Winners Medal after a period of 43 years, Connelly along with other members of the 1966 World Cup winners squad were presented with their winners medals yesterday by Gordon Brown at 10 Downing Street, afterwards the members of the squad were guests of honour at the World Cup qualifier against Andorra at Wembley.
The Longside's very own colinwaldron, remembers Connelly's days as a Burnley legend: Fondly remembered as a flying right winger wearing the number 7 shirt, however Connelly's first and last games for Burnley came in the number 11 shirt. He arrived at Turf Moor via his home town club St.Helens Town who featured in the Lancashire Combination. Houghton Road the home of St.Helens Town was a rock hard surface in my playing time there and if conditions were the same years earlier then Connelly must have been a sight speeding his way past opposition players alongside the railway lines; wonder if he raced the engines leaving the Junction Station?. How times change eh ? World Cup winners medal but ended up running a chip shop in Brierfield. I don't think any of our current superstars will have similar retirement plans.

I was fortunate to be sat at a table with John at Dave's "Harry Potts" launch, and he is an absolutely lovely bloke. I'm delighted for him.

I first met John in the eary 70`s, he started coming in to my Dads Pub not to far from His chippy, so over the years I got to know what such a good and loyal friend John is, in my opinion He should have had many many medals and awards as he is what you call a true Gentleman and what an honour to have had a World Cup winner such as him in our ranks good on you John

Great chip-shop it was too! I used to go there for my dinner when I was at Mansfield.

1st went in his chippy late 60's I think & still went in weekly up to mid 80's when I worked at S&N. How long did he have that plaice? (sorry couldn't resist) I know he sold it 2 or 3 years ago.
He also lost a few England caps & medals etc a few years ago, when his home was broken into.
Very pleased he's got the big un now.

Splitting hairs a bit I know but I think both John and DT are wrong in the interview in saying his wonder goal in the European Cup was scored at Reims.
I'm fairly certain that the away leg was played at Parc des Princes in Paris.
