It's the Canaries against the Clarets. Delia aside, here is a quick insight to our hosts, Norwich City. The 17th of June is the red letter day in the history of Norwich City Football Club, as it was on that very day in 1902 when a meeting of friends at the Criterion Café in White Lion Street Norwich where the "Canaries" were Born. Burnley by contrast were 20 years old by the time Norwich formed. ![]() By the time Norwich had become a "Professional" Club in 1905 Burnley had played their five hundredth league game. But while Burnley had gone through various colours before settling on the Famous Claret'n'Blue in 1910, Norwich had been playing in Blue and White halves and going by the nickname "The Citizens", it would be three years earlier than Burnley when they changed there colours to Canary Yellow. By the time they reached Carrow Road, Norwich had been situated at two different addresses "Newmarket Road" and the aptly named "The Nest", but in 1935 with Norwich rising through the League's, a decision to build Carrow Road was taken, and it's there where Burnley travel to on Saturday. Norwich have one or two links with the Claret's a few that come to mind are John Bond was manager there for seven years between 1973 and 1980 making a real "good" name for himself in management. Kevin Reeves Burnley's half season hero, made his name there too under the tuition of John Bond. Another would be Wayne Biggins who replaced Kevin Reeves at Burnley and Nelson born and now Manchester United No2 Micky Phelan who have worn both colours to name a few. Another interesting fact between the teams, it appears that Peter Noble is the only Claret to score 4 goals in a game and not end up on the winning side! This happened 34 years ago when Burnley who had just been relegated from the top division played hosts to Norwich City at Turf Moor in a second division match up, Peter Noble who scored three of his haul from the spot, but with replies from Ted McDougall(2),Phil Boyer and England World Cup Winner Martin Peters the game ended all square at 4-4. If Burnleys glory years were the sixties, then Norwich's glory years were the late 80s early 90's with class players such as there newly installed manager Bryan Gunn in goal, Steve Bruce, Micky Phelan, Ruel Fox, Jeremy Goss, Kevin Drinkell, Robert Rosario, Chris Sutton and Robert Fleck! These players might not ring a bell with a younger generation of football fans, but for Norwich City these are real greats.
This year Burnley comfortably beat the Canaries 2-0 at the Turf a game where Burnley should have gone Nap! But that was under the old regime and Glenn Roeder, Bryan Gunn wont allow Norwich to roll over like that again.
Norwich look to a winning mentality after the 1-0 defeat to Preston North End at Deepdale last Saturday which leaves them sat in 21st place in the Championship and with only 32 points from 33 games, Relegation to the third tier of English football is looking more and more likely. The Norwich City Team news could be anyone's guess, so here's mine. Adrian Liejer's looks to keep his place as does Alan Gow who made his "Canaries" Debut in that Preston defeat, Jason Shackell and Mark Fotherington set to continue in the Norwich starting 11. Norwich are no pushovers and with quality throughout the side should start to make inroads up the League. Burnley after taking 5 points out of the last 9, will look to Chris Eagles who scored Burnleys late equalizer against Coventry on Tuesday to possibly start he may take the starting place of either Thompson or Robbie Blake as Burnley look to emulate the 1-4 win at Carrow road 2 seasons ago. For all those not making the long trip why not log onto the Longside. |
